I have the autopilot pump internal check valve problem on my 2017 R-31S. I.e., won't hold course, continual turn to port, resolves after tightening brass screws on pump.

After combing prior posts it is still not clear to me, is the recommended fix to?
a) install the check valve kit
b) install a new Garmin Smartpump

Interested both in recommendations from owners who have dealt with this problem personally, and an official recommendation from Fluid Motion.

I installed the check valve on mine last winter. Works perfectly now.

I installed the check valve and it completely fixed the issue. The reason I didn't go with the smartpump was due to cost. The check valve install was less than $300, doing it myself. The Smartpump was around $2000. The smartpump is basically a new pump with stronger check values already installed.
It's my opinion that the original pump did not have strong enough check valves which allowed the back pressure to bypass or overwhelm the check values in the pump leading to the issues you've described. . When you add the check valve kit, inline, it prevents this from happening which accomplishes the same thing as a Smartpump but at a more reasonable price., (if you call Garmin direct they may give you a reduced price on the "kit".)
I have some pictures in my album of the install I did. If you'd like any more info please feel free to PM me.
Hope this helps.

PS Don't get fooled by the word "kit" as it doesn't come with the "T's", plugs or the extra hydraulic lines.

Thank you. You've both confirmed my inclination. Off to order my check valve "kit".
