Gentleman,
I have a 1997 R-21. I'm trying to build an auxiliary tiller for,
one-in case of an emergency resulting from a lose of rudder control
and/or
two-In order to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine while steering the boat from the stern
Has anyone created or done this mod before?

I'll be watching this thread closely. My personal emergency solution is my Honda 5HP kicker. I can run the diesel and steer from the stern with the Honda not running. It acts as an adequate emergency rudder if you have steerage way. IF worse comes to worse, I can fire it up and have all the steerage needed.

Some of this depends on the position of the rudder when loosing cabin steering control. If you loose it in hard over to either side, then using the honda might be problematic. I'll have to test that next time I'm on the water. A person might have to go over the side of the boat for 1 minute to manually move the rudder to center.

I hope someone has some good thoughts on emergency tilling the main rudder though.

on my 97 classic, it is a straight shot through the rear seat down to the tiller. I can imagine an emergency tiller post entering a hole in the rear seat, going through where the steering removable cover now is, and engaging the tiller. In other words, on the classic, you do have a straight shot to get to the tiller from above with minor mods like a removable cover in the rear seat lid.

.. I just picked up the remote cable controls and electrical harness for my 2005 R21 3YM. and the Yamaha 9.9 electric start power tilt auxiliary ... I'm installing the flush mount control on the starboard side, just aft of the step, with the box itself mounted inside the cutout where you might store fenders or boat hook. We're looking into fabricating a bracket at the top of the rudder post to tie the cabin steering and rudder into the outboard. Turning the cabin steering will operate both the rudder and outboard ... an emergency tiller would simply be an extension of that bracket .. that's the plan at this point .. Rob
