Was wondering what people thought what is the best RPM you should cruise at for your engine and keeping in mind to maintain reasonable fuel Economy. I have a R-27 180hp with turbo yanmar

I like 1600 RPM. That yields 8 mph at 1.7 gph and 4.5 mpg. It is a speed that is still in displacement mode and does not create a large wake but still gets you there. Comfortable. 2015 R25sc w/ D3-150 Volvo.

I find the sweet spot for most diesel engines is about 1800-2000 rpm's. If your going down the road in your diesel pick up at 1800 rpm you should be doing about 55-60 mph. My tractors pto is rated at 540rpm at engine rpm of 2000. My boat seems to run best between 1800 and 2400 rpm's.
Hope this helps, I'm sure others have different opinions! Bob

I asked a similar question some months back, and received a large number of responses.

My conclusion was that generally speaking, owners tend to either run the boat at displacement speeds, or at the fastest speeds Volvo recommends. Not much in between. And the proportions were about 50-50.
