Good Afternoon:

I have the 2018 EZ Loader triple axle trailer for our 2018 R29 Sedan. I will be towing with a 2017 Ram 2500 Diesel that is equipped with a Class V weight carrying hitch.

Looking for recommendations on a ball mount. Assume that it will also be Class V with a rating of 16,000 lbs and able to accomodate a 2 5/16" ball. But not sure if it should be fixed, adjustable, or drop.

Appreciate the assist!

Mike

Hey there Mike,

I like using the Weigh Safe brand which incorporates a tongue weight scale which is kind of cool. I use the 6" adjustable one and believe the rating is sufficient for towing the weight you plan too. If my memory serves me right, the height off the ground to the top of the ball is around 26-28."

Thanks Mike,

I use the Weigh Safe brand as well. It is especially helpful when loading my tractor on my flatbed trailer to get the balance correct. Mine is also the 6" adjustable one. If you use it in salt water I would recommend greasing the ball mount piston. The ball mount piston is stainless steel, the body is aluminum which gets messed up quick in salt water. At least mine did. The are not cheap... about $300. An adjustable mount, with out the tongue weight scale, is about $200.

I love our Weigh Safe. Here are few thoughts based on our experience.

- do not put it under water (it’s a long story!). The scale is not sealed.
- we bought the longer adjustable one because of the severe angle of the entrance to the garage (I think ten inch) but didn’t need more than 6” and had to cut it shorter because it actually hit the ground. The 6 inch adjustable one should be fine for almost any situation.
- they come to fit a 2 inch receiver and a 2 1/2” receiver. For 16k lbs you will need at least the 2 1/2” for sure but check because I recall the rating is 15k lbs. Your truck will need the 2 1/2” receiver to match.
- If you need to put it upside down to adjust upwards check that you have clearance to do this past the bumper. It has a short shank into the receiver and may interfere with the bumper. It does on the truck we use.

I still love it. It is a pretty impressive (and expensive) piece of work!

I have the Weigh Safe hitch also. What surprised me was my 2012 Ram 2500 diesel was RATED to tow more than the factory hitch was rated for. I had to upgrade from the 2" receiver to the 2.5" (Drawtite), which was rated for 18,000 lbs. I think they make a 2.5" 12,500 lb. also, but I went for the big one. Removal of the factory hitch requires removal of the bumper and raising the back of the bed off the frame 2", so you might want to get a quote for installation from your local hitch shop, and then decide. Also, some of the fasteners (captive nuts, etc.) were not included and I had to source Grade 8 fasteners to complete the install. No biggie, but it took me all day to install. I got the 10" drop hitch also and it's definitely not needed (too long). The trailer frame should be level, front to back, when towing. Keep in mind that R-29 is going to get heavy when loaded up for a trip, so a few bucks at your local truck stop on their weigh station is a good idea. Go in the middle of a weekday when they're not busy so you can unhook your trailer from your truck. Make sure the attendant knows what you want to do {weigh} beforehand (whole rig, boat on trailer only, hitch weight). You'll get a certified print out of each.
