Our Cutwater is now in Florida where the water is warm and very conducive fur marine growth. We have a Yanmar 180 and I would like to use “Barnacle Buster” to clean out any growth. It seems that it should be easier than trying to pull out the heat exchanger. Is it possible to pour the liquid into the raw water filter directly? What is the official take on this? Has anyone done this on a Ranger?

Hi Bob,

I also live in Punta Gorda. On Redbird. I have done it. Would you like to come over to review? It's a different engine, but the process is the same. PM me if interested and I'll share my phone number.

Regards, Kip

Barnacles don't like city water. Flush all your systems with tap water with them running. The end of a garden hose fits nicely in the small strainers for AC and Generator. Just remove the sea strainer lid, with the Seacock closed and run the hose in the open strainer with the engine running. Flush the toilet and run your raw water pump if you have one. Put the lid back on and have a beer.

If your still worried run vinegar through them.

If its sold in a marine store it's a rip off and there is a natural solution. Just google it!

Good Luck.

I have used Saltaway in the raw water systems, easy to add through the sea strainers. Non toxic and safe for the impeller.
I first used this product to clean the exhaust elbow and after soaking the elbow overnight in a bucket it did a great job. http://www.saltawayproducts.com/EngineFlushPage.htm

I removed the raw water head flush and installed fresh water flush using SeaEra conversion kit. This opened up a port on the sea strainer. I installed a bronze ball valve with a Garden hose connection on it. I can now start the engine put a garden hose in a bucket close the thru hull ,open the flush ball valve and run the engine on fresh water. Mixing some vinegar from time to time to help dissolve deposits. This flush can also be used as an emergency bilge pump. I use a 3/4 inch hose.
