barricades for eyebrow shelves

While on a mellow cruise in South Sound during the most tranquil February days imaginable (photos etc. on our web site at www.bioaquatics.com/hokukai), we talked about the needs for our boat. Has anyone come up with a good idea for a barricade on the eyebrow shelves over the helm that will keep charts etc. from sliding off in rough water conditions? would love to get some solutions. We are thinking of maybe a netting with bungee cord gathering along the top edge, or . . . ? ? ?

We had doors put on the shelves with magnetic locks because we had the same problem. They work great. I will try to get to the boat and take some photos to include in our photo album. I will let you know when they are there.

Magnets, what a good idea to work with, looking forward to seeing your photos. These shelves have so little depth but are so handy for charts and guide books, looking for ways to prevent things from falling on our heads while still having easy access.

We solved the problem by tacking on ( from behind and on the inside so it does not look tacky ! ), black elastic type mesh. It is the type that would be on the outside of a backpack to form a pouch....etc.I believe it is the same mess that is also tacked onto the underside of your helm seat.
It is strung taut across each opening. Looks good, provides easy access and keeps everything that we stow up there....up there !

I drilled a couple of holes to string bungee cords, then used the cords to hold netting. Not as fancy as adding doors with catches, but it was quick, easy and has worked pretty well. I have some pictures in my album

Thanks for all of your suggestions. We are going to try the mesh mounted from behind, maybe with some elastic along the top for stretch. We did an earlier attempt with bungee cords that was just too bulky and didn't work for us. Wondering how you attached the mesh along the bottom edge? Did you do a separate piece for each shelf opening, or one piece going all the way across? Wouldn't it be nice if this were a custom made item that came with the Ranger Tugs! Seems like something we all could use for safety.

We did each section with it's own piece of stretchy mesh.Attached from behind using a small hand and a small staple gun. We cut the mesh so that is was about two thirds the height of the opening. Not easy to get attached from behind but this has worked well in giving us access as well as keeping things from falling on our heads. Hope this has helped.
