I am soon (February) to be a proud owner of a new R27 and the wife asked what I wanted for Christmas. I thought the boat was plenty, but she is insisting. I have a great wife.

Anyway, I have been looking at the Magma Kettle 2 BBQ and have two questions:

1) Does anyone have any feedback for me on this selection?
2) Any suggestions on mounting? Removable via fishing rod holder, permenently mounted on rail, or other?

Thanks

Mark

See the pictures in Ainokea folder. I used a removable and mount for a table on a deck boat. I got the leg and mount from West Marine. Mounted the base on the dive platform. When you want to use the grill just lock the leg in place and then place the grill on the post. I drilled a hole in the leg and use a set screw knob to lock it in place.Works good and doesnt take extra space in the cockpit.

My wife and I purchased the model that can be used as a grill/oven/stove burner. We have used it alot this fall and winter. I baked a pie in it but you do need to keep the lid ajar and I used an oven thermometer. The rail mount works. They do recommend removing the unit while under way as the salt spray will eat its parts. There will be grease from BBQ so location below the unit must be considered. The rail mount has a quick release. All and all it is a good solid cooking machine.

We have an R 27 and I have put a Magma Chefsmate, which is rectangular, on the rear rail. I have a canvas cover for it so I don't remove it while under way. I did change out the quick release for a standard nut on the fitting closest to the port side so that the BBQ was next to the curve of the rail and did not interfere with the pump out port, which is right under the rear rail. I store the propane bottles under the seat next to the built in propane for your stove. Magma does sell an adapter so you could connect the stove to your big propane bottle and not have to carry the small bottles. When I priced it out it was about $160 +/-, not worth it for me. I am very happy with it and we use it a lot. I do remove it in the winter when not using the boat.

Really like the BBQ mount Ainokea used! Looks like you are also using the "Dinghy Sling" for your dinghy. We have the same sling, but am jealous of your BBQ mount.... thanks for sharing the idea.

Thank you all for your wisdom. I'm sure I'll be back for more.

Mark,

If you will send me your e-mail address I will forward chapter one of my book, The Fantail Chef. Chapter one discusses the various types of grills on the market, styles and fuels choices. It also includes some great pictures. I personally selected a Magma Party Grill 2 and could not be happier. In addition to my personal use on my R-21, I also travel to boat shows and promote my cookbook and cook on the boat with the Magma grill. It works great. Any questions, please drop me a line.

P.S. I posted some pictures of me at the Boat Show

Mark,

If you saw the pictures on Larry's site regarding the Magma grill on Ainokea all I have to suggest is a good place to buy both the grill (I like the Marine Kettle 2 for $160 here: http://www.rivermarinesupply.com/xcart/ ... Grill.html) and the pedestal for any of the Magma Kettle grills for just $65 also at River Marine: http://www.rivermarinesupply.com/xcart/ ... 10184.html . They have several other larger grills that mount to pedestals. If you go with a bimini with canvas screen/plastic window sides, then a rail mount system won't work for you. Get the optional legs to use your Kettle grill on the dock (they cost $30) and use a pedestal for grilling on the boat.

I have been using Magna Products since they first came out (Lived in Long Beach CA where the company was located). I have always had the Kettle type--both in charcoal and gas. I would get one of the rectangular ones in the future--I like the two layers of the grill racks and that you don't have to deal with the kettle lid.

Santa just bought me a new rectangular grill, attached cutting board and pedestal stand. I just couldn't look at Ainokea's BBQ any longer without BBQ envy! Thanks for the great idea and pics. As recommended, I went to Rivermarine.com, best prices I could find for the Model: A10-1218L

I have seen all kinds of envy for: horses/cars/houses/boats/women/etc... But this is the first case of fantail envy...
