Hi Tugnuts,
We are buying a 2021 Ranger Tug R27 in May and I am so confused about the bedding. We cannot do any cutting or sewing so we have to buy something already usable. I am completely new to this so I just want to understand my options. We won't be living on the boat just sleeping on it a couple of nights, maybe 1-2 a week, depending on how well we do.

Many places sell universal V-berth bedding. How well does that fit an R27? Do we really need a custom fitted mattress or would the universal v-berth work?

The Boat Galley recommends Quahog Bay bedding. They sell universal V-berth sheets with a "Cinch system". Has anyone tried them? How well do they really work?

We are also considering the custom Yacht bedding option as well. I know they come highly recommended. I just find it hard to swallow spending $1600+ for a mattress, sheets and a coverlet. The coverlet is basically decorative and that price doesn't event include a blanket! Do I really need a custom blanket or will one from Target work?

I really appreciate your advice.

We boated for 37 years with V-Berths that we slept on for an average of 4 weeks per year. Depending on the boat we used either standard Queen or King sheets (and blankets) and just folded the extra under the mattresses at the narrow end. When we used mattress toppers, which eliminate the joints pressure points between the various cushions, we just purchased the queen or king size topper at JCP, or wherever, and cut it with an electric carving knife to fit the shape of the v-berth. We ordered a R29 last fall with a walk around bed that is really shaped strangely. We decided this time to spring for the Yacht Bedding. With shipping the cost quickly jumped to $1800 (a drop in the bucket compared to the price of the R29, but not insubstantial). We went with a blanket rather than the toper because the toppers are not machine washable and our 4 pawed crew members require washable fabrics. At this point we are still waiting to take delivery of the new boat and try the expensive bedding. Nevertheless, we have and had no ill feelings for having saved the $ on bedding for the earlier boats. For our R25SC we bought sheets and a bedspread at the Christmas Tree Shoppe (sp?) that had a very nice nautical motif and were comfortable and inexpensive (and may actually become the topper for the R29 and sheets for the mid cabin). If you start out with regular rectangular bedding and decide you have to upgrade to something form fitting, you can always use the king size rectangular stuff in the land dwelling.

Our Yacht Bedding arrived not long ago and I'm only sorry that I waited to order. Unless you are a professional or highly skilled, you are not going to make a high quality alternative. Regular sheets and a king fluffy comforter work fine to get a good night's sleep, but, it's always a very hard to make bed.

We purchased bedding from Yacht Bedding.com shortly after purchasing a 2010 R25 SC. My wife was sold on the idea, but I was having a hard time coming to term with the cost of the bedding.

That being said, after completing a two weeks sail last summer, I'm now a believer. Sure, we could have purchased a foamy and cut it to fit. The fit of the mattress topper and associated sheets/comforter is perfect. Making the bed is a breeze. The overall bedding is very comfortable and I would recommend it to anyone thinking about getting it.

Sure the cost is up there, but it's worth it in my mind.

And I'm on the opposite end of this bedding issue.

I went to IKEA, bought standard bedding, and downsized the duvet for the V-berth and dinette so they wouldn't hang down so much. Bought buckwheat pillows from Pine Tales via Amazon. Under $700 to completely outfit the boat including utensils and tempered glass dinner set (or you can pay Corelle $7 per plate).

The bed is almost 4 inches of memory foam. Very comfortable to me. My son has no complaints about the aft berth, either. If the bedding gets soiled and stained, I'll buy another set for $50 from IKEA. To each his own. We all have different priorities.

I would highly recommend Yacht Bedding but only get the topper and sheets if possible. The comforter is pretty but not very functional. We gave up on it and replaced with a standard comforter (primaloft synthetic down filling) which has been much better for actually sleeping. But we would not want to be without the topper!

On our Ranger I use sheets from Bed Bath and Beyond that are stretchy in all directions. They work great on these beds. I asked a sail boat friend when we first had our boat and she has used them for years. I would love the Yatch Bedding sheets but I could not get over the price. Perhaps when I grow up!

I cut down a Bed Bath and Beyond king foam topper for my 2011 R29 and it was just fine. I lived aboard for quite awhile and it was comfortable.

Still, I wanted something better for my 2020 27 OB and after reading all the posts here for over a year I sprung for the Yacht Bedding combo (mattress, mattress pad, sheet set and coverlet) I was very unimpressed with their communication...requesting samples and placing the order resulted in silence. Yes everything I asked for was attended to in time but it was very impersonal. I felt more connected ordering widgets from Amazon.

The product is very high quality, super comfortable and incomparable to a simple commercial foam pad. The sheets/fabrics are high quality too. I’m glad I spent the money. I hardly ever say that. Another vote for Yacht Bedding.
