Hi Everybody,

I have a 27 and I'm having the belts replaced. I read randomly about cutting the forward panel in half for access. does anyone know a step by step process in doing it?

Thanks and Happy Holidays,

Dennis Nitka

Hi Dennis,

On our 2014 R27 the front edge of the step has a teak panel held with screws. You may not have this if your boat is older. If not, there will be additional steps to improve access here first. Also the process includes additional steps below if you have a Webasto diesel heater with a fuel pump under the step.

This is what I did.
- Remove the teak panel mentioned above from the front of the step.
- Remove the Webasto fuel pump if applicable. The fuel line needs to be disconnected. Cut the power/control wires and install quick disconnects to the wires. Make the connectors different (male vs female) on each wire to make it impossible to miswire when reconnected.
- Remove everything from the aft area of the cave.
- Remove the carpeted vertical panel from the aft cave Starbard wall. There are a half dozen or so square head screws.
- Remove the slide out panel that is carpeted in the cave and insulated under the step. There are square head screws both in the cave and under the step.
- cut the panel at 30 degrees where the carpet ends and the insulation begins. Cut such that the half panel that is under the step is supported by the half panel extending from the cave. (I.e., it can’t be pushed into the engine compartment when the cave panel is in place.)
- reinstall the cave half panel.
- reinstall the cave vertical panel
- never touch the cave panels again! 😀
- complete your engine maintenance and testing of forward (#2) bilge pump and high water alarm.
- reinstall the half panel under the step.
- reinstall the Webasto fuel pump. Note that in the future the Webasto pump comes out while attached to panel under the step. Test the Webasto before closing up.
- replace the teak panel at front edge of the step.
- have a beer and be satisfied that in the future it will take half the steps and none in the cave!

Good luck!

Curt

Thank you Curt and Andrew,

Yes, my R27 is a 2010. We love it. It's 1 day to Christmas so I will go over your instructions on the boat on Wednesday. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your instructions.

Hope you have a great holiday,

Dennis

I have a 2011 R27. To get better access to the belts on the front of the engine I removed the plastic drop down hatch and enlarged the opening with a jig saw, leaving enough area to provide screw holes. Then went to a plastic shop and bought a piece of tan starboard and cut it to fit. I routed the top with a round over bit to be easy on the feet. Notched around the molding, drilled and counter sunk screws. In the starboard I placed a 4 inch round plastic screw plate that unscrews with a half turn to provide access to the diesel tank valve shut off should an emergency arise. slightly off center to provide a straight arm reach to the valve.

I would also go through the exercise of changing the impeller and assembling all the tools in one convenient location, so if the impeller stops, you know the drill. Shortly after getting my R27 I had a mechanic change the impeller. The gorilla so tightened the cap screws that I had to borrow a large air impact driver to free the bolts. Normal allen wrenches may not work (metric). I bought two metric allen socket 6 inches long and cut to proper length and now use a socket handle to work on the impeller. To get the belt off the pulleys use wooden tongue depressors to ease the belt off the pulley. A socket the proper size on the flywheel with a breaker bar will turn the engine to help belt removal/installation. A metal instrument will ding the pulley and down the road that ding will shred the belt. (compliments of the gorilla) I was alerted to the broken belt with the water flow sensor I had installed about a year ago, before the gorilla arrived.

Mike Risso posted a great message a while back on how to change the impeller, some great tips.
