Best Fuel Card - Truck Stops

I have just purchased a Cutwater C28 and Diesel tow vehicle. Plan on using mainly truck stops for refueling. Any recommendations on station brands or fuel cards? Pilot / Flying J seem to be on most searches (or they may have just paid to appear on top of google searches).

If you join Good Sam RV Club it might save you a few dollars while camping and it provides a small discount at Pilot and Flying Js. Unfortunately for us, most of our routes towing the boat do not involve these truck stops, but when they are on the route either towing the boat or the travel trailer they do tend to have much more room for maneuvering, parking and decent prices.

As S. Todd says, we get a 5¢ per gallon discount (off the cash price, and you can use a credit card) at Flying J and Pilot with our Good Sam Life Membership (not sure if it is the same with an annual membership). Most of the Flying Js have RV lanes, so much easier to maneuver than the regular lanes and you aren't mixing it up in the big truck lanes. Pilot owns Flying J, so you get the same discount there, but only the newer Pilot stations seem to have the RV fuel lanes. Nice thing about the RV lanes: no overhead structure, so you don't have concerns about height restrictions. Usually better maneuvering room, as well.

Love's has a loyalty card, but I haven't applied for it, so I can't say what or how much off they offer. I could be off, but I think they give you the cash price when using a credit card with their loyalty card, but it depends on how many gallons per month you purchase. Really designed more for truckers.

We use the Gas Buddy app to plan our fuel stops when traveling - it has been mostly accurate and you can get an idea of what the fuel prices are ahead. If your tow vehicle has the range, you can by-pass states with the highest fuel taxes by planning ahead; or, at least find the best price in an area.

Don't forget Costco. They have diesel now at many gas stations, and can be located near highways.

You will almost always pay a hefty premium filling up the boat on the highway, though. Wait until the boat is in the water and you will save $$$. Marine diesel doesn't pay federal highway tax (25 cents a gallon) or state highway tax (8-50 (fifty!) cents a gallon) depending on the state. Generally that makes marine diesel 30-60 cents cheaper than road diesel. Right now, cheapest diesel near me is at Costco at $2.99. That's cheaper than my marina (which is the most expensive fuel dock in southern WA), but about 40-50 cents more than a bunch of other local fuel docks.

I got TSD recently and tried it in a recent trip to Florida. Worked great. They have an app that shows the discounted pricing ahead of time so you can plan your stops. Would highly recommend. Not necessarily cheaper than a gas station a bit off the highway but when towing, those stations are not always designed for a rig. Only issue I had was that they typed in the wrong “last 4” of my social in their system so it didn’t work when I first tried it but called on Monday and they resolved immediately.

They charge 10% of the savings as a service fee plus a flat $0.65 per usage. The image below is what the app shows. That is the discounted price before the charges I just described. The second images shows the magnitude of the discount. It varies by station brand but it’s all in the app.
