Best Method: To drain oil Yanmar 6BY-260

I have a 2012 RangerTug R29 with an inboard Yanmar 6BY-260 diesel engine. I want to change the oil, so I'm looking for recommendations on the best method to drain the old oil from the engine. This is the first time I've done this. Thanks in advance!

On our 4BY tie to the dock and run the engine in gear 950 to 1000 for 1/2 hour or until the oil filter is to hot to lay your hand on it. Pull the dip stick and insert hose from my oil vacumn pump and begin to suck the oil. Make sure the tank on the pump can hold the volume of oil. Might need to transfer to another bottle. When you hear a gargle and vacumn is gone, oil is out. By then the filter will have drained most of its oil, and will be cool enough to change. Messy job, but lots of disposable plastic garbage bags makes clean up easy.
Replace filter and fill with fresh oil, run and check for leaks, then adjust level per dip stick.

Thanks for the information. Approximately how long does it take to pump out the oil, the diameter of that tube must be fairly small? In fact, can you share what size tubing you use?

$200 for a pump and 2/3 of a five gallon bucket .... it works but not a good deal.... it came with 1/4 inch hose. It takes at least an hour to pump the oil, even when oil is hot.... I put a 1/2 inch hose on it and takes 10 minutes. You don't need to put the hose inside the Volvo D4-300 pump out tube. Just connect it to the top of pump out tube with a DIY rubber fitting. Pump out metal tube goes to bottom of oil pan.

Years ago I bought a PELA 2000 for my Yanmar Sail boat engine which was 2 qts. My 4BY is 2 gallons so I need to empty several time on each oil Change. I plan an afternoon to do the job. Tube is small thru the dip stick tube, but I am retired and its time spent messing about with boats.

Do you know where the oil filter is located and how to change it?

Thx. I haven’t put my eyes on the filter, but I read it’s on the starboard side. I pretty good either car mechanics, so I’m guessing this shouldn’t. Be much different…other than tighter spaces. Is there something else I should be looking for or thinking of?

On my 4BY2, the oil filter is a cartridge-style housed in a canister on the port side of the engine. According to the Yanmar BY series Operation Manual, the 6BY2 has a similar arrangement. A 36mm socket is required to remove the top of the canister.
