I've got a 2007 R-25 with a single bilge pump. Newer models came w/ dual pumps. i'd like to install a second bilge pump just in case. Have found a compact low profile 600 GPW pump that would fit below the engine. It's got a tinned 2 meter electrical connection, I'm considering wiring it into the thruster battery. Looking at running the pump outlet hose by the waste tank and connecting into the starboard side scupper.

If anyone has already installed a back-up bilge pump would like to hear your lessons learned, recommendations or cautions.

Thanks

I have 2007 R-25 which also came with one bilge pump, and no bilge alarm.
I installed second bilge pump and bilge alarm.
In order to make room under the engine for the second bilge pump, I removed the original bilge pump and the float switch and put them in my junk box.
I installed two new bilge pumps, both with the latest technology which has no float switch, and is very compact.

In each case, I attached the bilge pump to a piece of starboard, the right size to fit in the bilge.
No drilling required under the engine in the bilge, since the bilge pumps are not screwed down to the bottom of the bilge.
They are just attached to the starboard and the weight of the starboard holds them in place.
The forward pump is attached to a double layer of starboard so it sits higher in the bilge.
The outflow hose goes thru the locker where the hot water heater is.
There is already a hole near the aft end of the hot water heater which is big enough for the hose to pass from the engine compartment into the locker where the hot water heater is.
I drilled a hole through the hull inside the locker and installed a thru hull fitting.

The original bilge pump is attached to the thruster battery, so I attached the bilge alarm and the second pump to the house battery.

The bilge alarm is screwed to the pan in front of the engine. It is possible to get a small electric drill into this location by raising the step, and removing the front, which is held on by four screws.

Who makes the two new bilge pumps? Also, who makes the bilge alarm? Do you have any pictures?

I also installed a second bilge pump in the Laurie Ann. The original bilge pump and now the second are wired to the house battery buss which I like because of their storage capacity of this bank. Also, I have toasted a thruster battery so I prefer the house battery arrangement.

The second bilge pump was placed in front of the Yanmar 110. The discharge hose was run to the port side and a thru-hull fitting was placed that is in line with the macerator pump thru-hull. I bought the thru-hull fitting from the factory so it is a matched set. The installation was very straight forward and easy. However, the name-sake of the craft could not be present when the hole saw was applied to the hull.

I have also installed a second pump in my 2007 R-25. I left the original pump in place (although I'm going to replace it soon as it is acting up again; I'll probably use a low-profile Gusher as the new Rule pumps are too fat to fit in the bilge, but I'm open to suggestions). My secondary pump is a 3500 GPH Rule mounted with a float switch and an alarm on the stringer right next to the starboard aft engine mount. That means it won't kick in until the water level reaches the bottom of the engine - that was my intention. I was originally going to plumb a new exhaust line to the side of the boat, but I wound up running it aft and connecting it into the cockpit drain line with a Y fitting.

Thanks for the clear descriptions. Currently in S. Korea on a job. Looking forward to getting back stateside and crawling around the bilge to figure which concept to implement before a long cruise in July. Had selected the Whale SuperSub for it's size and test ratings but will probably PM a couple of you on the high water alarm and pump choice.

You asked:

The bilge pumps and bilge alarm are Rule. I got them from West Marine.

Previous post by another states that Rule Bilge pumps with built in float switch will not fit into the gap between the propeller shaft and the turn of the bilge.
That is a true statement.
The Rule pumps I got do not have a float switch, but they ARE automatic, via some sort of electronic wizardry.
The are very compact, and will fit into the bilge, if you hold your mouth just right.

Sorry no pictures.
