Picking up a gray r29 in a few weeks. It's our first boat and it will kept in the Cape Fear NC area. Looking for some help with a good name- we would like to try and come up with something that pays homage to the areas interesting maritime history. Please help!

Just a thought about a few names, a brainstorm.

Maritime, Salute, Homage, Tribute. Two of these are your ideas from your message.

Tar Heel Tug

Ocracoker

How about Grey Beard?

Just some small research turned up these as possibilities...

I'm working on a name for my r-27 as well. I hope to pick it up sometime in June from Seagate Marine & bring it home to North Myrtle beach so it looks as if we will be distant neighbors. We did several searches looking for just the right name. Boat US has a long list of names & there are a lot of Hawaiian boat names that are pretty cool as well. Hope to see you on the water this summer.

Getting overly cute with boat names is not always a good idea. If you transmit a call for help you don't want to have to explain the name or even spell it to potential rescuers. DSC helps, but only for a Mayday. Voice still comes into play even with that. Just something to think about.

The time we had to obtain permission to enter Nassau Harbour, we were the only boat in all the calls we heard over an hour or so that did not have to spell its name. Rainbow's End. Works even in "Bahamian".

We have our new "Hero Red" R 27 being built and have decided on "Blu Tug 27" 😀
Cheers

Thank you everyone! I appreciate the ideas and input. Please keep them coming!

This is excellent advice IMO.

"Crossroads" may be appropriate.

It's your first boat, and you'll be embarking on a new and different path. And Southport, where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean, is said to be one of the world's crossroads.

And, it holds to the simple, unambiguous, easy-to-say VHF friendly recommendation from abcandjrc (which I second).

cheers,

Bruce

Congratulation on your new gray R29. We took delivery of our gray R29 in November and struggled with a name also. We looked at "Gray Pearl" and a whole lot of others that we rejected mosty because there were others in our area with the names.

I was looking for something to honor my Dutch heritage. Unfortunately most of what I came up with was not pronounceable to the Pacific Northwest tongue. We finally selected "Amstel". Amstel is the name of the river that flows through Amsterdam and the basis for the city's name. Amstel comes from the old Dutch and means "area abounding with water".
Since, like you, we are in an area abounding with water so it seemed to fit.

We tried to not get too cute with a name but gave in to our lighter side and named our dinghy "Amstel Light". You can guess what the primary beverage is on board.

Good luck choosing the "right" name.

Just picked up our new R-27 ...."Tug Struck"....home port Ormond Beach, Florida

Based on your member name "Anjin-san" why not something Japanese?

Looks like Roanoke Island figured in the history of the area. Roanoke is a strong name and would work well as Roanoke Ranger, Roanoke Roamer or Roanoke Islander. Maybe a play on Fear - No Fear, Fear This, Fish Fear This, Fear Nought...

If I was naming a boat in Myrtle Beach, there'd be only one possibility - Chiggers. A Spring Break back in the 70s introduced me to chiggers, and it seems to have taken a decade for the itching to go away - ruined my prime ankle-modeling years.

Good luck,

John

One of the kids came up with a good one, although it has no historical significance... Gandolph, as in Gandolph the Gray. Fitting given her color.

Excellent point. You will be using that name on the radio a lot. Especially if you do any cruising. Easy to pronounce, easy to understand is good.

For what it's worth, whatever you decide has meaning for you is the one you should adopt. Personally, I like Gandolph, but then, I like the LOTR trilogy. Robyn and I chose SLO Ranger, as our roots are in San Luis Obispo County, Ca.

Sorry, mis-spelled... It's Gandalf. Yeah, I really wanted to go with a blockade runner derived name, but that didn't go over well at home...

"Cheerwine Ranger" comes to mind 😀
