This month's photo contest inspired me to share what food I always have on the boat for the unexpected. Sometimes you are out in the morning to fish and you decide to stay way later than anticipated. The fishing is so good you don't want to leave, or the fishing is not good and you have to travel further. Sooner or later, you're hungry.

Or, you go out for a little afternoon cruise. Then you want to drop the anchor, have some wine and see the sunset. Finally you say what the heck, we'll hang on the hook for the night. And you get hungry.

When the trip is planned I'll bring much nicer food. For the spontaneous events, these are the stalwarts I keep in the cabinet. B&M brown bread may be less familiar. It seems to be more of a New England thing. I am originally from eastern Long Island. This bread lasts forever and is very filling. Works well with SPAM and also baked beans. You can order it on Amazon.

The pilot house crackers are also good although they have gotten a bit expensive. You have to have baked beans on board, of course.

And there's my old friend Dinty Moore. I sometimes open a can of that after a long day even if I have nicer things on board. Fills me up and there's no hassle factor.

What do other people bring?

Bob’s emergency food supply!
Would not think of launching the boat without!

My favorite snack is shelled lightly salted Pistachios.

I didn't know they made Spam singles! I'll have to get that.

My family isn't the biggest fan, but I take Mountain House freeze-dried food with us on the boat, camping, etc. I really like the Biscuits and Gravy, but it's a calorie and salt bomb.

I'm never without Amy's Chili and Wild Planet albacore...there's always bread and/or tortillas in the freezer.

I've never prep'ed for more than an overnight so it was simple. Because of that, I don't store much more than bottled water on the boat. As I'm thinking in the future to expand my time on the water this is much appreciated. Funny, several items I keep at the house for a quick meal when I get too lazy to cook.

For the breakfast types, I keep Idaho Spuds and Spam on board. I've also tried canned cheese from Australia--that's not too bad.

In Wisconsin here, it's always cheese, crackers, and venison meat sticks. We also have olives for the Martinis. Mango Habenero White Cheddar is one of our favorite cheeses.
