Bottom Paint

After 4 years I am ready to repaint my 2020 29S hull. I am inclined to use the same ablative paint that Ranger applied to my new boat. Another tug owner told me that was Sea Hawk AF33. Can you please confirm this?

What is Ranger's current recommendation for recoating of my hull? My boat is in the water in South Puget Sound year-round. Since the factory-applied coating lasted 4 years I am inclined to use the same thing, but would appreciate your thoughts. My marina believes that other ablative paints, in particular WMP PCA Gold, work better. Also, do you recommend 1 or 2 coats? How many coats did Ranger apply to my new boat? Do you recommend applying a hard-coat antifouling paint to underwater hardware (shaft, rudder, trim tabs)?

I did research TugNuts first but could not locate any clear guidance. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey Doug,

Seahawk AF 33 is the paint you have on your hull and is still what we are currently using. If you got 4 years out of the paint I'd say that's fantastic. CSR in Des Moines does all of our bottom paint jobs and most of the repaints as well. They do 2 coats on all applications unless you specifically ask for more. I'd reach out to them to schedule if it's time for a repaint, 206.878-4414.

Yes, it has been redone once, but not by me. I am assuming they used the same product that was on the boat originally.

FWIW, my 2014 R27 had (and has) Seahawk AF33, so yes, I think you can be assured that your boat had the same paint originally at the factory. Don’t know and can’t say about the redo.
