I have a new 2015 21ec. I plan to have it in salt water for several weeks at a time so I plan to paint the bottom.I'd like to know what Application process and which product the Factory recommends.

We used Pettit Skip Sand Primer in Gray and Pettit Vivid for the bottom paint, as you'll find many have. We trailer our boat and it is used in both salt and fresh water and sits on the trailer when not in use. I've attached a direct link to our blog that shows you the process we went thru, if you're interested.

Hello Jim,

That's a nice tutorial. I noticed there was no paint applied to the propeller, rudder, or stern thruster. I presume the bow thruster was left unpainted too. Are these areas not subject to "growth" if left unpainted?

Thanks,

dave

Good thread for me. I will soon be unemployed and hope to spend enough time afloat to need bottom paint 😀 Though there are few things I hate more than applying it

When we put the bottom paint on the Charlotte Ann We worked methodically and it took around 5 days as I recall what with coffee breaks and letting the various layers of paint cure overnight, etc.
I did not really notice anyone paying any attention to our comings and goings. But the day we launched (a Saturday) I had half a dozen offers to paint other boats.
Apparently bottom painting is not highly popular among boat owners - seems like happy hour is their main activity
Now,we are in the 5th season on the Petit Vivid and it is time for fresh paint (sigh)
