There are 5 different brass reading lights on my R31CB-- and the glass shades slip out of three of them on a regular basis. There doesn't seem to be any mechanical connection that holds the glass shade in place (it is friction only), so if the lamp gets bumped or jostled, the glass shade slides out and is left hanging by the wires. Is this a common issue, or am I just (un)lucky? Any suggestions for how to solve, or should I just glue the darned things in place?

Allan,

Could you please send me a photo of whats going on so I can get a better idea of what needs to happen to fix this? You should have my email but if not it is below in my signature.

Thank you,
Kevin Lamont

Will do Kevin. I'll be up at the boat next week and will send a picture directly to you via email. Thanks!

Please post the solution here, as I have the same problem, and others may also.

if you mean like this one (sorry its small)

I have a grey locking nut on the inside of the shade that screws in and holds the shade in position.

We have several of these lights on our 2014 R31CB and have never experienced this problem. OOOOO crap, I shouldn't have said that!

That is an ITC 69704-BR/98-D Directional Glass Shaded in case you ever need to replace it. I just purchased one form RVUPGRADES.COM for my CW28. There should be a retainer ring that screws onto the base around the bulb that holds the shade in place. I hope that is a clear description.

Here are two photos of the problem with my lights. It looks like the 'glue' that attaches the plastic bulb holder to the brass base has failed. Can anyone suggest a fix?

Thanks for posting these pictures Larry H. This is exactly the problem that I have had with 3 of my lights-- and it doesn't appear to be a problem with the locking nut.

That looks fundamental failure. Is there a grub screw to tighten? If not some glue that’s heat resistant might work.

Had mine for 7 years, no problem. Maybe a bad run. If that needs to be disassembled for some reason in the furture I am sure a small sheet metal screw inserted through the side will keep it in place. If it can stay assembled then a dab of silicone on the side and reinserting it will most likely hold.

Closing out this thread...

At the advice of Kevin (Ranger Tugs), I successfully used superglue to re-attach the light mechanism to the brass fixture.

The only thing I would add is that it is better to squirt the superglue onto the inside surface of the brass fixture, rather than to the outside of the black plastic of the light mechanism, so as to prevent superglue from squeezing out and making an unsightly mess.
