Buying a Ranger Tug 29S. Have questions.

I am buying a used Ranger Tug 29S from a private seller. What is the process I should use to ensure proper transfer of title and that is clear etc? (escrow, documentation service, etc)? The only other boats I purchased have been from a broker who had this all lined up.

Ask if the boat is free and clear of any liens. If so you get that cleared title at the same time you pay for the boat. If there is a lien then you make the check out to the lien holder for the unpaid loan and the difference to the seller. If the boat is documented then the seller needs to sign the documented paper over to you at the time of sale. Also there will be a title for the trailer and or dinghy if the boat comes with them.

Hi WM,
You may already know this, but documentation refers to US Coast Guard documentation. It wouldn't have a state title to clear, so that will help guide your process. None of this is that difficult, but with the cost of these boats, it might be worth having help. Several people have made positive comments about Fred Robinson, a lawyer, who helps with purchases.

Or you could use the services of a Marine Title company. They act similar to a real estate title company but for boats. Funds held in 3rd party escrow until all the paperwork is completed. If seller had loan (lien) on boat this makes sure that is taken care of at closing. Not that expensive compared to your peace of mind.
Several companies in the greater Seattle and Anacortes areas.
