I have a 2015 C-28 with Garmin 7512 system. On the Garmin screen my depth number flashes the same number even though I travel some distance. Then it works again for awhile. Does a flashing depth number mean I need a Garmin update?
thanks

It must be the phase of the moon or something... There have been a bunch of these recently.

Read this one and it should help you.

This has been a common problem. The first check is to see if you have a transducer directly glued to the bottom of bilge or a cup glued to the bottom. If you have a cup style there is propylene glycol in the cup and the transducer is attached to the cup by twist lock attachment an o-ring is installed to make a seal between the transducer and cup. If the transducer ring is missing the glycol can leak out and eventually the symptom you described will happen. That would be the first check. http://www.airmar.com/uploads/Brochures/p79.pdf

The brochure shows what I am describing.
The installation guide will help you to confirm installation is correct and help troubleshoot your problem

Thanks for providing those links- that thing was always a mystery to me, never rcvd documentation or orientation about it when I bought the boat new two years ago..totally freaked out when my depth readings were off- and the simple fix that I found out through trial and error was to add marine anti-freeze....I found your post when trying to find out if the cap screws on or just sits there..one or the illustrations clearly shows slots for the tabs on the cap, showing a slight twist is needed. For me, anytime something goes wrong, I think the whole boat is going to explode or something..now I come to the tugnuts site after I breath deep and say to myself- "everything is gonna be alright" 🙂

I agree TugNuts is a good resource for resolving issues experienced on a Tug or Cut. There are a lot of " hands on" owners sharing there experiences. I glad the links helped.

I too had a problem with my depth readings when water was deeper than about 350 ft the unit would not work until I was in less than 100 ft and reset the unit by turning off and then back on, so I bit the big one and replaced the unit with something more reliable.
Your depth sounder / fish finder is only as good as your transducer !

As you can see the thickness of the hull exceeds the requirements for the P-79 !

Is that a cutout of the bottom of your boat? It looks like there is a layer of plywood in the picture. The hulls are solid glass and no wood under the water line. That is what I was told. Is that wood that I am seeing in that cutout? If it is there is no way the transducer would shoot through that.

Yes that's the cut out from my boat, No that is not wood just different color of fiberglass or a filler or insulting material, maybe the factory can comment on thickness and type of material, it's from a 2009 R-21EC
