2014 Cutwater 28: Looking for suggestions on how to remove the hot water heater. The problem is access to the forward hold-down fasteners securing the heater. No access that I can see. Thanks!

It's possible, just need a ratchet with a short extention and a long arm. The the forward band is the same as the aft.

Thanks, good to know it can be done.

On my 2016 C-28 there was nothing fastening the front. Only the screws on the back (stern) of the water heater. I had a small leak so I removed the heater. I then removed the casing around the heater and then took the drum to a radiator shop and had it pressure tested. No leaks. I replaced all the heater hoses and have had no leaks since. If you remove the back screws you can discover if it will move a little. My old heater hoses were tight around the heater so it felt semi tight until I removed the hoses.

I'll be attempting to this same removal in the near future. Does anyone have tips on disconnecting the coolant hoses to avoid spillage into the bilge? Thank you.

Close both coolant ball valves at the engine. Remove the hoses off the valves at the engine. This will help control the spillage and not drain any coolant from the engine.

Place a bucket in the engine compartment bilge. Put the lower engine coolant hose in the bucket. Blow on the hose using a small air pump ( inflatable boat pump). Push the coolant out of the line and capture it in the bucket. This will include all coolant that goes through the hot water heater and the bus heater at the helm. Once you have air coming out of the return hose in the bucket. The hose is clear and antifreeze spillage will be minimal if any.

After the new heater is installed reverse the process. You want to fill the hose, heater exchanger, and bus heater with coolant to eliminate air in the engines cooling system.

Using the coolant captured in the bucket. Place a small hand pump into the bucket. Make up a hose adapter from the hand pump discharge hose to one of the coolant hoses. Place the other coolant hose in the bucket. Pump the coolant into the hose filling the hose, hot water heater exchanger, bus heater exchanger and returning the coolant to the bucket. Once the coolant returns to the bucket the system is filled and primed.

Attach the two hoses back to the engine ball valves. Open ball valves. Start engine and bring up to temp. Shut the engine down and check for leaks.

Brian, as always, thanks for the advice.
