Another electrical question about my ‘new to me’ 2019 C-28.

Any time I disconnect/re-connect shore power, I have no power on board until I reset an inconveniently located switch on a smallish rectangular panel, way down under a hatch below the cockpit cooler area. No matter if I shut off the shore power breaker on the AC panel first, or the breaker on the dock pedestal, etc…always have to press that reset button. If it’s supposed to work that way, I wish they would have put the reset in a more convenient location :/

Any ideas would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

I've only ever had that breaker trip once on our C-28. Normally on the AC panel, I will have everything on the AC panel switched off and all the power sources (Shore, Inverter, Gen) turned off. I'll hook up the shore power, make sure the red light on the shore power plug is on, make sure the light is green next to shore power on the AC panel, and then turn on the switch for the shore power. Then I'll turn on anything necessary such as the battery charger.

It is not supposed to do that. That switch is a ELCI breaker. It is a 120 ac Leak detector. It will trip if there is an imbalance of amperage between the Hot and neutral. ELCI Breakers detect amperage difference (imbalance) between the hot (black) wire and the neutral (white) wire and trip if there is a significant difference (leakage) between power going to the boat (hot wire) and that coming back (neutral wire) from the boat to shore power. This difference is .03 amps or more. It does not make sense that when the shore power pedestal breaker is off and then you unplug the breaker trips. If this happens at the same shore power location and dock try plugging into another pedestal. There may be a electrical issue with the one you are using.

When I first purchased our C26 we had the same issue with the ELCI tripping. It did not trip all the time but frequently. I found the connections at the shore power connection in the cockpit ( wire connections at the receptacle) were loose. There was some indication on my plug of heat which lead me to pulling the receptacle. I replaced the burned electrical connectors and reinstalled confirming that the connections were tight. I never had this breaker trip again unless we overloaded it. It will also trip if there is a 30 amp or more load detected at the breaker. If you are not comfortable with troubleshooting electrical I would have a ABYC certified electrician take a look at what is going on.

I would first confirm it is not your dock pedestal.

Hi George,

Brian is right. Make sure there is nothing amiss with your shore power pedestal, and if you can confirm that, then check the connections at your inlet in the cockpit, as Brian mentioned. Something needs to be amiss for that to trip, so make sure. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Ralf
