I've got a 2008 R25 classic with a Raymarine C120 plotter. The boat was originally used in Ontario, and doesn't have detailed maps for my area of the world (the Pacific Northwest). I bought a CF card with North America wide maps, figuring that I could just plug that into the C120 CF slot and I would be off to the races. I am not. The plotter won't successfully turn on with the new CF card. I looked around and think the issue is that I would have to update the software to use the new map card, but I also saw that doing so would disable the ability to have radar overlayed on the map unless I upgrade some equipment.

I could use some advice:

1. is this an example of user error? Is there something in particular I'm doing wrong where booting the plotter with the new CF card shouldn't cause it to just hang on the loading screen?

2. is there a way to upgrade the maps without having to upgrade the software of the C120 itself?

Also, if anyone knows of a good source of information on the C120 (in addition to the manual) that would be great.

I have a C80, which is similar, but smaller screen. I use a 16GB CF card with a Navionics Plus subscription. I down load areas of the country that we are planning to visit. It has worked well, and I can overlay radar over the top. I think the issue is these old units have very limited memory. I think the latest update for the software is v5.16 came out about 2012. I've been really happy with the operation of the system. I use Garmin Blue Chart on a Ipad as a backup and for route planning. The Raymarine is consistently more accurate.

I had to update my E120 on my 2008 R25 and, as I remember, it was not straight forward. I had to update the MFD's firmware first and then get the correct CF card. I found the techs at Navionics were very helpful in making sure I did it all correctly. I would suggest you call them. I think the number is 508-291-6000.
