We have a new R-29 and are having a great time learning about the boat and starting to explore the Georgia Strait. Just had the tug for 5 weeks but have been out every weekend.

I do have a question - it seemed last week that when I was at a very slow speed and shifted the throttle into neutral that my steering would lock up and I could not turn the wheel. When I re-engaged the throttle into forward I could then turn the wheel.

Is this possible? Has anyone ever had this type of problem?

We would appreciate any advice on what to check.

thanks

I've not experienced this but I do have a question. When you experienced the steering lock was the auto pilot engaged? Not sure if it was if this would make a difference or not but others may know.

Jim has posed a great question. If the autopilot is engaged, the manual steering will not respond. Otherwise, on our Ranger 29, we have had no steering issues like those described in this thread.

However, do check the steering fluid. On ours, there is a small cap just forward of the steering wheel. You should see fluid just below that cap. If not, it needs fluid and the system may need to be bled as there could be a leak. No fluid, no steering. Steering fluid can be purchased from West Marine. The instructions for bleeding the system is contained in the owners manual for that system and it is not difficult.

If the fluid level is fine and autopilot was not engaged, check for physical obstructions in the steering system by looking at the steering ram that is at the transom and in the middle of the tug by watching the mechanics as the steering wheel is turned. If it looks good but considerable resistance is found, an exterior look at the rudder may be in order. Our tug got a huge number of barnacles on the rudder and trim tabs that needed to be scraped off.

Thanks Jim and John - I will follow up on your suggestions. Thanks for the advice

You also want to check the shadow drive. When it's working you can override the autopilots
Steering. If it's shut off your steering will fight you.
