Canadian BC whale keep out

As of 2021 Canada has created whale keep out zones. Two are by S Pender Island and Saturna. I created boundary on Garmin based on Lat/Long found in Interim Order for the Protection of Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) in Waters of Southern British Columbia, 2022. I made the area Red so I will notice next time cruising by Poets Cove.

We found out the hard when stopped by local marine police in very rough water! Sharing so others can avoid being stopped.

The annual (Pender/Saturna) SRKW restricted areas show up clearly on the iOS Navionics app.

I'm seeing these in Aqua Map, too.

In a nutshell it looks like almost the entire Southern coast of Pender Island for 1/2 nm from the shore. (Have not looked closely at Saturna, seems less clear and narrower.)

We got called by the Coast Gaurd as well and asked to move out of the zone. The zone is not on our Garmin Chart but I found it on on Navionics later.

One of my co-owners was stopped on this issue earlier today! They definitely take it seriously.

Interestingly enough, he was not stopped directly but hailed on VHF. I think the Canadian Coast Guard may be monitoring AIS transponders for impinging these zones, possibly automatically (we have AIS transmit on our boat).

Found out ordering the Navionics update was not the correct update. The chartplotter I have uses the BlueChart g3+LakeVu g3 Built-in. Purchased the update from App store, downloaded to Active Captain and updated the charts.
Whale Keep Out area aka Vessel No Go Zone, shows up when the Restricted Areas -> Other is checked.

Lesson learned to keep electronic charts updated!

One more step when updating BlueCharts via Active Captain. Must remove the Garmin G3 chip from the plotcharter, otherwise the Garmin G3 chip is what you see not the update. After removing the Garmin G3 chip from the memory slot I was able to view the Vessel No Go Zone aka Whale Keep Out.

All good to go for cruising to Cananda!

If you follow the link on that page to the Interim Order at https://tc.canada.ca/en/interim-ord...orcinus-orca-waters-southern-british-columbia You will scroll down and the coordinates for both Saturna and Pender are given. It didn't taken me long to enter those in my plotter and connect with lines. For me, a lot less expensive and time consuming than updating charts.
