CCU Location

2017 R29CB-- Where is the Auto Pilot CCU located on this boat? I have looked everywhere!!

I think you’ll find it behind the bottom drawer in your galley. Take out the drawers and look or feel behind the plywood bulkhead. You may need a mirror or camera to see it.

Yes same as 31. Really long reach, be careful bracket is easy to break, but cheap, been there.
Why do you want to access? you correct heading by turning the whole unit. Otherwise should not need to access.

Think my electronic compass has "gone out". The little boat icon on the chart plotter screen does not point in direction boat is traveling. Tried running the "Compass Calibration" routine twice. Got a "Q" number of zero (on scale of 0-100). I understand that the electronic compass is what determines orientation (direction of travel) on Chartplotter. Any advice welcome.

Not sure what style CCU your boat has. Garmin has gone through a few changes in recent years, from a “ball” style to a rectangular screw-down box, to an updated version of that rectangular CCU. You may need to call Garmin support if you cannot get any results from the sea trial wizard. I have found them to be very helpful.

At the risk of saying things you already know or have already done, here are some thoughts: make sure your cables are securely fastened at both ends, make sure there are no ferrous metals or sources of magnetic interference close to the CCU, do the sea trial wizard on a calm day with little to no wave action, current or wind, perform the actions at slow to moderate speed and start making way at a stable speed before hitting the start button on your calibration tests. E.g., for the circle test, start the circle (with the engine and rudder, not with your thrusters) then hit the “start” button and continue with a constant speed until the screen says 100% complete. The speed should not be so fast that you experience pitching and rolling when you run over your own wake—just a mild disturbance. If there is any question about it, you might want to run through the dockside wizard again to insure that it has the correct settings. Have accurate data on hand before starting the dockside wizard so you know the values to enter. Good luck!

Yes, has happened to me before. Turn off all power to boat for a few minutes. Worked for me.

To turn off all power: Turn off all battery switches, no shore power and no generator.

Is this what you mean by turn off all power?

Since your electronics are part of the switched load on your house bank, you only need to switch off the house bank battery switch. Turn it off, wait a minute or so (some people say 10 minutes; one minute worked for me when I did it a couple of times) and then turn it back on. It’s like power cycling your computer or smartphone. It may or may not work for the problem you are experiencing but it’s easy to try.

Ah mystery solved. So on my boat the CCU is mounted in the cave above ac, along the wall where the throttle is.

So wouldn’t you know I installed teak map holder to that wall to the right of the steering wheel, low on that same wall.
In the rack I have maps and recently added Marlin spike and led work light. Boy the Garmin did not like my led work light with its magnetic base!! As soon as I removed it Boat moved back to correct heading on Chartplotter. Put the light back in the rack and the boat display rotated incorrectly, mystery solved.

Does anyone know where the Garmin CCU is on a R27OB? Mine's a 2018. It's not visible behind the helm, in the cave, nor is it near the ECU and pump in the stb lazaret. Possibilities are under the throttle control among the rats nest of wires, behind the microwave, or under the pilot seat with the webasto.

Apparently my CCU was mounted in an inappropriate location behind the ac in the cave. Garmin sent a technician out to my boat, 2021 R29, and after a lengthy search, finally found the CCU. He moved it toward the stern and attached it to the starboard side of the hull. He ran a program test before and after to measure the magnetic field affecting the CCU. The difference was dramatic and the after reading was within spec range. BTW, an inquiry to Fluid Motion during the Garmin tech visit was fruitless. FM personnel did not know where the CCU was mounted.
