The charge battery switch on the panel in my R-27 is always set to charge. When would I ever turn it off ?

Thanks,

Well, when you need to service the charger, for one. And when you need to service the batteries, for two.

Loaded question. What year is your R-27 and what charger configuration do you have. When on shore power I always leave my charger on. If you are anchored out and have a generator and need to top off your batteries then on.

She is a 2020 R-27 OB. No generator.

Thank you

The charger only works when on shore power since you don’t have a generator. When running your OB, the alternator charges your batteries.

The answer to this also depends on whether you have a combined inverter/charger and the configuration of your 120VAC panel. On our R27 Classic the inverter and battery charger are separate devices and the inverter can source any of the 120VAC breakers. Turning on the battery charger breaker when being sourced from the inverter creates a feedback loop that can damage the inverter. So in our case the battery charger stays off unless we are connected to shore power.

In general, I recommend turning off all breakers for devices that are not in use, especially all those tied to the inverter to minimize battery drain.

Hello,

The only time your boats battery charger can be used is ONLY when on shore power. Before you disconnect shore power you want to turn off all 120v items like hot water tank, outlets, charger etc. If you wanted to charge while away from shore power and without using the engine I would suggest a small generator. Oh also your boat is equipped with with a separate battery charger and separate inverter. Hope all this helps!!

Thanks,
