Had a question re charging lithium house batteries. Can the Abso 1220 charger charge two different types of batteries? I have one Abso 1220 charger and a breaker for “charger 1” & “Charger 2”. I thinking I can use lead acid batteries for thruster and starting and lithium bank for house. Thanks

I don’t know if any multi bank charger that can charge different types of batteries with a single charger. You will also have issues when under motor power. You will need some alternator or controller after it which will know how to handle the battery chemistry. I know of some lithium batteries that have electronics in them so they can be treated as if they were lead acid. But in general lithium battery management is crucial to their longevity and survival. Do i need to mention scooter and hover board fires due to cheap charging methods.

From the owner's manual (p 9) "The three battery banks must be the same battery type."

There is a lithium “smart” battery.. it has electronics built in that make it a drop in replacement that adjusts to what it is charged with and also balances if you have more then one ( this is important with lithium ) I looked at these and asked the manufacturer and was told they are no problem to mix in with regular batteries..I really like the idea of lithium but really couldn’t justify the cost. I’m just not off the grid enough to need the extra capacity . I stuck with the AGM..got 8 years from the first set hoping this set works the same.

Thanks. I was able to get back to boat and get a good look at charger manual. From the manual...
“The KISAE Abso Charger is a fully automatic multistage battery charger with the ability to charge 3 separate battery banks. When first connected to an AC power source, the charger will check all three battery banks before charging commences. The charger operates on an isolated charging design where Battery Bank 1 is separate from Battery Bank 2 and 3”
Looks like the charger will do the trick.

I hate to burst your bubble but while the typical multi-bank charger does allow independent control of each battery bank they do not allow for a different charge profile for each bank. This means, that assuming the banks are kept independent (I.e., no ACR between them), they can each be at a different state of charge and the charger will independently run through the preset charge profile. They will not, however, charge one bank according to a lithium battery profile and another bank according to an AGM profile. All banks typically will be charged with the same profile unless the charger specifically states otherwise.

Regardless, if you have the standard ACR setup the banks will all be combined during charging so it will negate the independent charging provided by the charger.

In a previous post I have described how the ACRs are counteracting the point of having a 3 bank charger. I also described that the ACRs have an inhibit input that prevents them from engaging. I have connected this input to the charger in such way that when the charger is on the ACRs are disabled. I monitored the individual battery voltages over some time to verify this is working as desired
