Sorry to be so techno-ignorant, but, can anyone explain the function of the Aux Input jack next to the stereo control head? It appears to be a mini phone jack in a covered receptacle. (I always assumed it was a 12v. plug, but it's not.)
Clarion is not particularly user-friendly, and their method of conncecting an iPod still puzzles me. I had purchased an accessory to connect the iPod through their c-Net feature, and that seems to work ok. So then what is the little plug in jack for? Alex, "Kamalani"

Alex,

You're ahead of me. I haven't been able to find the port for the c-Net connection, nor have I been able to find a source for the iPod connection/accessory.

Did you NOT get instruction manuals with your Clarion Radios? What is the model number?

Charlie

This plug makes it possible to play your IPod through your stereo. Go to your local Wal Mart, pick up the cord for just over $3.00, plug one end into your IPod, Sat Radio Receiver, Etc the other into the plug on the Clarion. Hit the Aux button and away you go. You control the volume with the piece of equipment that you have plugged in.

My radio is an earlier modle without the iPod plug-in. My cure was to install another cigarette lighter on the top of the port-side shelf above the radio, purchase an FM transmitter for the iPod that both transmits and charges, and play my iPod that way. Works very well. Every now and again I see the transmitter on sale in the $10 range so I have a spare on board as well. The cigarette plug was a bit pricier -- but the whole cure still well under $50.

Charlie,

I'm not sure of the model number; I keep all the manuals on the tug.

The instruction manual for my Clarion is about as clear as mud. I grew up reading early Japanese manuals on electronic equipment, cameras and motorcycles; one would think I would have figured out manuals by now.

I could find nothing indicating where the plug in on the set might reside. If it's on the back of the set I'll never find it, or plug something in, if I can find it. There might be enough clearance between the set and the hull for a business card.

The same info situation exists for the cord, not even a picture. Sounds like I just go to Wal Mart and buy a CNet cord. Solitude, are you saying that port which looks like a 12 vdc plug in is the iPod input via CNet?

I've been away from sound equipment for a few years, so things have passed me by. Lost interest because my hearing isn't as good as it once was, too much time around operating jet and rocket engines and too many miles on motorcycles and in open cars. I've compounded the problem by becoming a live blues fan; there's no such thing as a quiet blues band.

Bought the iPod for my wife.

Gene's right, the Clarion manuals are as clear as mud. So it seems they have provided not one, but two ways in which to connect an iPod, while not really making much sense of either one in the manual. The cNet connector has to be purchased separately, and is a 3 part adaptor that fits a square plug in the back of the unit. As for the separate Aux-in plug, (the one that looks like a 12v. receptacle), I should be able to buy some sort of adaptor that has a phone plug on one end, and the wide, flat iPod connector on the other??? And these two approaches are not related to each other?? All of this makes perfect sense now....NOT! Alex.

NO, WAIT! - after re-reading Solitude's post, I should be shopping for a simple mini-phone cable with the mini-phone plug on both ends. Plug one end into the iPod phone jack, and the other into the Aux-in jack. Right?? Then control the music w/ the iPod, rather than with the Clarion display as per the cNet. Trust me, trying to control your music with the Clarion, (even with the manual in hand, Charlie), is like trying to learn a new language. Anyway, thanks to all yuz for helping me sort this out. Alex.

That's how I operate my IPod and it works great. A cheap and simple solution.

Guys, I'm still confused.

Is the plug in next to the Clarion an aux input jack?

Is it a mini-phone connection? (What ever that is)

My iPod (actually Peggy's iPod) has two connectors, one with many pins and the other for the ear plugs. Am I hearing the ear plugs connector is a mini-phone connector?

So I need a cord with that fitting on each end?

Who said "Ignorance is bliss" ? :?

If you do indeed have a Mini Stereo pin connector alongside the Clarion then yes, you will need a Mini Stereo to Mini Stereo cable to connect the iPod to the Clarion.

The "many pins" you mentioned is the Apple iPod dock connector port.

For example, here's a link to a Belkin mini-stereo to Mini Stereo cable - http://store.apple.com/us/product/TN778 ... MjE1NTkyMQ
