Hi

31CB

My anchor box (chain & rope) has a clog in the drain - any tips to unclog without harming?

Thx!

Wrap a rag around the end of a garden hose with low flow and push against hull just enough to purge the line back to the locker. It will usually just be flotsam laying in the line, and no real pressure is needed, or wanted. I have used low air pressure (like 5 PSI) and rag on the nozzle also. Then look in the locker for the gunk and remove it. Obviously best to have rode out of locker.

If you have the ability to visually inspect the hose connections at both ends this could be useful. I’ve heard that on occasion one end or the other is loose or becomes disconnected. May not be your case at all but if your in that deep be sure to check on this.

Thanks. used hose water from exterior side to try and dislodge, seems to have helped but am still not sure there isnt remaining debris. may get a long pipe cleaner and floss 🙂

I've had great success chasing out drain lines (automotive sunroof corner drain hoses) using square weed trimmer line.

its easier to roll with your fingers, you can blunt/round the nose end slightly before pushing through.

my 2cts,

It's worth checking for a kink. We had that issue on our R25 classic. It wasn't clogged.

In the torrential rains and over-the-bow waves we encountered on our cruise last week in the San Juan’s and Gulf Islands, we discovered a new, and minor, leak at the bow end of the vee-berth. Of course the obvious place to look first is the drain line coming out of the anchor locker. Alas, that is not the source of the leak.
But I did notice that the anchor locker drain hose had flattened just a few inches from the through hull. That’s where it makes a 60-80 degree turn with just a few inch of radius. That hose will need to be replaced ASAP - which seems like an easy exercise. I think the new drain hose will be a bit longer so the turn from vertical to horizontal is not so abrupt.
