We bought our first boat, a tug 21 last year and are new to boating. Located in Hood Canal. We found ourselves in a few uncomfortable situations as wind and swells developed quickly and were not forecasted. A true learning experience, it was very scary for us as the boat is small and we were unsure how she would handle. We would like to take her to the San Juan’s and the gulf islands. Question, are we safer and more stable in a 23 or 25 foot? Or should we keep her? Would you fellow more experienced boaters feel comfortable moving throughout the puget sound and islands in a 21 or would you recommend moving up in size? If moving up 23 or 25 and why. She is in beautiful shape and we love the inboard motor. There is peace of mind knowing the engine and boat are in beautiful shape and she has been well taken care of. An unknown of getting a used boat has its drawbacks.

Thank you in advance

I'd recommend the R25 over the R23. The R25 has a larger engine (more HP), a little more weight, and an enclosed head.
Both the R23 and R25 will easily get you to the San Juan Islands and all around Puget Sound. Both travel comfortably around 28 mph.

We just published this last month. It may help.

PNW Girl... a canoe is perfectly stabil under the right conditions. I was going to say just get the boat you want that serves your needs, and that you can afford, but yes, you also need to consider how you want to use it and the conditions you may find yourself. For sailing down the west coast to Mexico we needed a 40-foot ketch rigged sailboat to feel safe and comfortable. Now a R23 meets my needs. I fish, spend the occaisional few nights to a week out with my wife and simply do not go out if the conditions are questionable. Discomfort doesn't necessarily mean not being safe but is it fun? Smaller boats = less money, less work but more limitations. Larger boats = more money, more work but more capable. The R21 is a fine boat. If you feel the need to expand your capabilities there will always be larger, more capable and more expensive boats to be had. Good luck and enjoy being out on the water.
