Our R31-SE is equipped with a GARMIN VHF 210 AIS.
Software version: 4.40
Hardware version:4.00

The Menu says “GPS NO”.

How do I connect it to my GPSMAP 7616xvs?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Google: connect Garmin 210 vhf to gps

4 page PDF installation guideline for a NEMA 0183 or NEMA 2000 connection from Garmin.

It should be a simple "plug and play" thru NEMA 2000 connection to your existing Garmin system backbone.

Yes. I have done it and It is a simple install if your boat already has the NEMA2k network. If not, its still not that bad.

I would add a switch to turn the network off and on.

I had the same issues of No GPS on my Garmin VHF 210 AIS....somehow it changed, operator error?

You'll need to select the proper communication protocol:

Try this based on the VHF 210 AIS manual:

Communicating Over NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000
NOTE: This feature is not available on all models.
You can select a connection either to a NMEA 0183 device or to a NMEA 2000 network. The radio can communicate over only one communication protocol at a time.
1 Select MENU>COMMUNICATIONS>PROTOCOL.
2 Select NMEA0183 or NMEA2000.

I believe this will allow the VHF to access the proper GPS protocol and your chart plotter will also display the AIS transmitting vessels nearby.....

Marc - so the NMEA 2000 wiring is already installed by Fluid Motion?

Claus,

Yes we install this at the factory and even is a system check when we test the boat. I am guessing that a setting got changed where it turned off the GPS signal for the VHF. Hope all this info above helps.

Thanks,

Thank you Marc and Kevin,

I went to the boat today and got the setting back, so all is well and I can make radio calls etc.

But I still have an issue with the GARMIN VHF 210 AIS. Even at the MAX BRIGHTNESS and CONTRAST settings, there is no way to read anything other than the large Channel numbers.

I will upload a photo to illustrate. The promo photos of the radio shows a perfectly readable display, so Kevin do I have a bad display???

I was able to convince a very reluctant Garmin Product Specialist to exchange my defective device for a new unit. Very fortunate, since I only have two weeks left of the 2 year warranty! PHEW!

Thats great! My friend had that problem on his GPS. He has not using the cover and the direct sun light bleached out the screen.
