Are the hand rails strong enough to put a scotty or cannon downrigger "Rail/Side Mount on the rail by the stern swim step door for a crab pot puller. Mounting the puller further forward on the gunnel does not give me enough swing with this particular pot puller. Realizing some modification or fabrication would have to be made for the rail angle bend. I currently have an Ace Brutus Pot Puller

Thanks Paulth

I also have an R-29 and a Scotty pot puller. I fabricated a mount for the stainless rail on the stbd aft gunnel.
this is right by the transom door. I also added about 7" to the Scotty puller arm. This allows me to bring the pots
aboard the swim step. I find this saves the gel coat from getting scratched. The stainless rail is through bolted
and is plenty strong. Sorry no pics as the boat is back in Seattle and we aren't.

Jim, Thanks for the information, If you get a chance please send me some photos of your modification when you are back on your boat. Paul

New to PNW waters, what/how do you bait the crab and or shrimp trap ?

Many people use fish flavored cat food, but my favorite is the remains of a whole roasted chicken. Just place it in a bait holder or zip lock bag with some holes cut in it and the crab or shrimp come for dinner.

If you Put your pot in an area where there are sea lions do not use fish or bait containing fish. Using cheap chicken or turkey legs suspended mid space in the trap is very effective using Al wire. Ace Brutus makes a longer arm available directly from them to keep trap awAy from the hull. I have pulled traps that easily weigh 65lbs so keep that in mind with your mods.

Crab bait................. Favorites in order.

Horse clams
Salmon backbones
Chicken or turkey legs

Good luck.
