I keep my boat in SW Florida, and one thing we have is lots of sun. Anyone have any experience or knowledge of how the hatch glass will hold up against crazing over time?

Thanks.

We use our boat year round in Florida and Rhode Island. So far no issues. I think the hatches are glass so I doubt crazing will be an issue.

Good morning Connerkip,
To answere your question we have alot of experience with hatches, from sail boats to trawlers to our current Cutwater 26.
The reality, no matter what the brand, size or shape they will ALL eventually craze!
Having lived in Florida & the Caribean for forty five years we have been through the drill, having said that we have & are loving in the Pacific North West & yes they will in time craze in this high latitude also.
Soooooooooooooo the solution is hatch covers.
They will prevent the crazing & the interior fading & let you sleep longer in the morning!
Take a look at our photo album "Elan"
Many photo's that might help, probabilly not the answere you wanted, but it's the answere?
Best of luck!

When you talk about crazing, isn't that a problem of plastic hatches? I am unaware of the ability of glass to craze. It will haze or etch, however...

The Hatches are not made of glass. They are made of Acrylic so the will craze. The only solution is hatch covers. You can see what we had King Marine Canvas in Seattle make for Destiny's hatches if you go here: http://www.helmsman-ph38-destiny.com/enhancements.html

Dave at King Marine would be able to get these made and installed on any new boat before it left the factory if you planned ahead. Dave does a lot of the canvas work for Ranger.

The covers we had made have elastic on the leading edge and two snaps on the back. This allows them to remain in place whether the hatch is open or closed.

Thanks for all of your input. Looks like I'll be going with covers. Thanks.

Sailrite.com has a free video on how to make your own hatch covers; You can sew Sunbrella with a home sewing machine for a small project like this.

I have a R25 and all the hatch covers are tempered glass- not plastic.
