According to the faq I can create a poll by:

"When posting a new topic or editing the first post of a topic, click the “Poll creation” tab below the main posting form; if you cannot see this, you do not have appropriate permissions to create polls. Enter a title and at least two options in the appropriate fields, making sure each option is on a separate line in the textarea. You can also set the number of options users may select during voting under “Options per user”, a time limit in days for the poll (0 for infinite duration) and lastly the option to allow users to amend their votes."

I do not have this option and assume I do not have appropriate permissions. Could this be altered?

I would like to create a poll, asking 'yay' or 'nay' on a Torqeedo 1003 for the dinghy on my R-25SC. Reading a little on this forum it seems to be a polarizing topic. Debating between electric /combustion.

Well a yeah or a nay without clarification may be misleading. I have the Torqeedo and like it, but it has limitations for distance. For my use it works just fine. There have been instances where speed and distance would have been nice. I have heard from a couple of people regarding poor customer service and issues with the battery or the drive shaft. Those would probably be a definite nay if it happened to me.

thanks knotflying for the response. I understand the relatively advantages / disadvantages of electric / gas and that the decision should ultimately depend on what the mission is. But that said, I would be curious what the Tugnuts community thinks, in aggregate, if for nothing else purely academic reasons but it might help drive my decision.

Something like this maybe?

Would you put a Torqeedo 1003 on your dinghy (inflatable RIB 260 CSM/Hypalon)? Which of the following options best describes your position.

a) Yes, go green! the Torqeedo has all the range / speed I need.
b) Yes, the Torqeedo weighs less, is easier to use, and there is no need to store gasoline.
c) No, the range / speed is not sufficient for my needs.
d) No, the battery takes too long to recharge after use.
e) No, the Torqeedo customer service is lacking and / or product is less durable than gas options.

a) yes
b) yes

We've had ours for 3 plus years. For our purposes the benefits outweigh the advantages and disadvantages of combustion.

Cheers,

Bruce

I vote to stay with gas. We spend upwards of 7 to 10 days away from a dock on hook at a time and use the dingy for exploring where we may travel for several miles over 3 or more hours. In those cases electricity is not a renewable resource. I carry a spare five litre can of gas to top up my 2.5 four stroke. If that runs our I can borrow gas easier than borrow electricity. I am not sure of the green energy balance. The energy cost to make the large batteries and the disposal of them in the end must also enter the green equation.
Also my little 21ec has to tow my porta bote with the motor still one, with the spare fuel attached to the boat. I would not want to remove a battery each time I moved anchorage.

I do not have one but I would vote yes for one solely because we want one.

(b) for me - I love that it is light, clean, can be placed in any position and doesn't need a can of gas to be stored. I sprung for the bags to hold the motor and battery and both store nicely in the cave. Just removed the previous owners big outboard bracket from the cockpit, freeing up valuable room. Perfect for me!

I'm very happy with my honda 2.5hp mounted on swim step and carry 5 gallons of gas in a no spill container. Always starts, air cooled, goes the distance, no battery to go dead. I haven't used an electric so can't compare but this small honda definitely doesn't feel like other outboards I have used. One downside: small air cooled motors like this can be load. Silent electric cruising I'm sure is very nice.
