I'm close to buying a five year old R-25 with the QSD 2.0 150hp engine. I know that Vessel View reports fuel consumption based on a tank gage, but I would like to see if the engine ECU sends actual fuel flow data that can be read by the Garmin MFD for the advanced calculations it can do. Mercruiser introduced an N2K interpreter cable over a year ago. Can it be done?

Don't know anything about the N2k thing. Sounds too much like Y2k to me. But vessel view reports actual fuel being consumed. If it were based on the tank gauge we'd all be SOL.

Yes, I installed it (NEMA 2000 Gateway Assembly) on our Cummins QSD several years ago. In addition to fuel consumption display/data the Garmin MFD will also import and display all your engine gauges. Comes in through the NEMA 2000 backbone. Very easy install. Remove starboard side panel in berth, behind helm station, to access wiring bundles and NEMA backbone in electrical compartment behind helm. I find using the Garmin fuel usage to be fairly accurate as opposed to my fuel tank sending unit which is one of the magic ones - it manufactures fuel over time.

Plus I am kind of old school from my flying days. Still use pencil and notebook for fuel consumption and gallons remaining.

Hope this answers what you are looking for.

Is this Gateway Assembly cable readily available?

Steve, to my knowledge, yes the Gateway Assembly is available through various sources to include Mercruiser. When I purchased mine several years ago I did a Google search and ended up purchasing through the Verado Owners Club Parts.

Thanks for the info. The cable is still available at that location for 379.00. I looked at the back of the unit and the port for the cable is blocked by a structural member of the hull liner. It looks to be an ethernet port. Did you plug a male female ethernet cable into it and then the cable? No space for that cable plug and screw down fitting. Or perhaps the Smartcraft unit was mounted lower or to the left some.

Good morning Steve.
Not sure of your comment regarding back of unit.
The Gateway Assembly does not connect directly to the back of Smartcraft unit; therefore, no ethernet connector required. The Gateway module has a data input line which is the cable with Deutsch style connector (CAN bus 10-pin) and this plugs directly into the Smartcraft junction box which is in the wiring maze behind panel in berth area (must remove to expose all wiring) on starboard side. The Gateway module output line connects direct to the NEMA 2000 backbone. On our R25 this is located in the electrical compartment behind helm.
Takes about 15-20 minutes to install with most time being to remove panel in berth. If you wish to review the install instructions send me a PM with e-mail and I will scan a copy for you. Would snap a couple of pics but we are not on the tug and will not be until Wednesday or Thursday.
