You guys have so much info..what do you think? We've always had Yanmar engines...We had a 30 foot sailboat for the last 28 years, then bought a R21 last year and wd like to move up to a R25 this year, but it has a Cummings vs a Yanmar engine??? What is the experience here, Tx, George and Sandy

Have an R29 now. First yanmar I have owned but have had 5 cummings and never had a problem with any of them.

I have a R25 with yanmar 4BY2-150HP. My buddy has a similar trawler of different manufacturer, with a Cummins. He has had problems getting DYI items like filters and such. Yanmar prats are more easily obtained. Suggest you talk to Peter at Winter Island Yacht Yard. He has a preowned R25 for sale now. No, there is not a commission in the sale for me. My 2010 has been a great boat to own. I also had an R21EC and moved up to the R25.

I have a Cummins in my Florida boat. Fourth season now and completely reliable. The professional captain who handles maintenance for me and many other owners rates Cummins as high or higher than any other make and he has probably 20 years of experience.
We've had no problem getting filters, belts etc. but obviously worth checking on access to parts and expert help if needed in your area.
Pete

The brand of engine is not an issue... They ALL have their quirks...
Cummins has a big reputation in their bigger engines in boats, trucks, tractors, earthmovers, etc...
The really positive point in buying a used Ranger, no matter which engine, is that the teething problems have been solved for you...
Forget about the brand of engine and pay attention to the boat's level of maintenance, the electronics, etc...
Other than the name on the engine display panel you won't know which engine is in it...

I have had my Yanmar for two years now without issue. Looking at the history in Tugnuts, there have been more issues with Cummins than Yanmar. Talking to other boat owners (not Ranger owners) at boat shows, it seems other regard Yanmar more highly than other boat engines. That's my 2 cents 😉
