Factory Help!
I am seriously looking (ready to pull the trigger) at two R-25s one is a ’09 with the Cummins engine and the other is ’10 with Yanmar 4BY2-150 – both are new -
Why did you change venders? Are there + or – to each motor and could you tell which one would be the best and WHY – I am plannning a long distance cruise, Great Loop -
I understand the mechanicals so please be as technical as you like -
A good answer will make the differance which boat I purchase -

Thanks for your assistance -

On Solitude, our R-25, we had the Yanmar 110 and loved it. On Karma, our R-29, we have the Yanmar 260 and love it. I personally would stay away from the Cummins after reading all of the issues that so many people have had. Now saying that, I love the Cummins in my Dodge pickup.

John and Laurie Gray have done parts of the Great Loop in their R-25. They have the Yanmar 110.

As with everything else, for the most part it is all personal preference.

Need to comment on that..... I have the 150 Cummins. I never missed a beat in the 2000 miles I just put on this winter. The program in the computor box needed to be changed when they 1st came out. Cummins sent a man all the way from Spokane Washington right to my home in Montana to change the box. Never been a problem since. The engine was new to Ranger but not new to Cummins. It is a proven diesel.
Yanmar or Cummins both make a terrific engine. You cannot go wrong with ether engine. I had the 125 Yanmar in my 1st Ranger. It never missed a beat as well. You may as well pick the color you like the best.

Yeah, bad news never goes away - jeez, stick up just one liquor store and the neighbors never forget

The teething problems with the early run of Cummins QSD 2.0 engines was a faulty CPU that caused hard starting... That was solved by plugging in a replacement CPU, and on this group I am not aware of anyone currently having a starting problem caused by their CPU.
The bigger Cummins are standard equipment in American Tug and several other up scale and up dollar boats...

I have a 2009 R25 with the Cummins QSD 150 engine and it has not missed a beat...
As far as why they changed to Yanmar, I could speculate but I won't... You will find that the factory says either engine is good...
Both engine manufacturers share complaints about replacement parts being either expensive, or not in stock, or both... If you are using the engine make as the deciding factor on a given boat you are not (in my opinion) doing yourself a favor... You will not see a difference...
