Hi-

Would love any/all suggestions of Boston-area mechanics who can plug into my '09 R25's Cummins / Mercruiser Diesel QSD engine and help me diagnose and repair a hard-start issue.

I've wasted too many months chasing a certain local mechanic who continues to string me along, so it's time to call someone else!

THANKS!!

Have you checked the glow plugs? They go bad and need to be replaced, that is usually the problem with hard starting diesel engines.

Niemiec Marine in New Bedford MA is a Cummins dealer. They also have mobile service.

Thanks, but this engine has no glow plugs.

If I may share my experience, and also quote another QSD owner on this site, it is a Mercruiser. All the software is Mercury, as are the parts. I strongly recommend: 1) Call Mercury factory service and ask them to find you a Mercury diesel service near you. Or not near you; must be a Mercury diesel service shop. 2) Have Mercury check the records on your engine. Be sure all the technical service bulletins have been serviced on your engine. They will track the repair. They want you to be satisfied.
I hope this saves you time and effort, It will save you money. I learned the above the difficult way after 11 weeks of frustration. Oh, and as others have said "It is a Mercruiser!!!!" and a great running one at that.

There has been many a post regarding the hard start. I seem to remember that it was an ECU issue, basically a replacement.

There were a few post about hard start with the Mercruiser Cummins. I believe in the beginning the voltage threshold setting was set to high. When cranking the engine the ECU would shut down because Of the voltage drop . This issue Prompted Ranger to change the battery configuration. The thruster battery became the ECM battery and the engine battery was for starting only. Eventually the Mercrusier reconfigured the voltage threshold lower with an updated ECM. The key is to make sure your battery configuration is correct and that the battery size capacity is at or above specification.

This is a thread that deals with this viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15322&start=15&hilit=battery+issues

This may or may not be your issue but it seems similar.
