Has anyone changed a starter motor on a Cummins engine in a R25?
Would be interested to hear how you got on!!!!

I did not change the starter motor on my Cummins 2.0 QSD myself but watched a mechanic take it out so he could bench test it when he was attempting to diagnose why the engine would not turn over. The starter checked out fine in the bench test. The problem turned out to be the main engine ground strap was not passing enough current to roll the engine. Fixed the problem by cleaning the connections on the existing engine ground strap and running a separate 2 gauge ground cable directly from the engine to the ground terminal on the engine battery. The whole thing consumed three hours of labor.

With respect to removing the starter. The mechanic did it all from inside the engine compartment. After removing the black plastic cover on the top of the engine, he unbolted the ECM assembly from the port side and laid it up on the engine to get it out of the way. From there removing and reinstalling the starter was straight forward though it helped that he was on the thin side. There was not a lot of room to work.

If your problem is the starter will not turn the engine over, check the engine ground before you go to the trouble of replacing the starter. This can be done fairly easy by using the ground cable from an automotive jumper cable set and running it from the engine side of the existing ground strap connection to the ground terminal on the engine battery and then checking the ignition to see if the starter will turn the engine over. Make sure your battey is fully charged first.

Thanks Ken. Our mechanic did the same. It wasn't the starter which bench tested O.K. but the two relays that were low down on the port side of the enging compartment that had been underwater for a few weeks. They were rusty and corroded. It wasn't a job I would liked to have done!!!
Thanks for your info.
