Cup Holder Drains?

On my R 31 the cup holder adjacent to the cockpit helm station has a drain but nothing is connected. As a result water leaks into the cabinet below where the battery switches and all the 12 Volt wiring lives. Not good. Should there be a drain connected? Same goes for the cup holders beside the bench seat at the rear of the cockpit. Water leaks into the compartment below where the steering gear, sonar etc. is installed. Is this an oversight or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance!

Bob

They just missed it during the install. There should be a clear poly tube discharging to the bilge. I installed three that were missing on our boat. It is just a push on connection. There are so many systems on these boats that it's easy to miss a thing or two.

Thanks Pat, looks like they left them off on my boat too!

My 2014 R-31 does not have them either. I have been meaning to measure the diameter and find a source for some tubing. Anyone know the diameter tubing needed?

Hello,

We have never installed drain hoses on the cup holders on the 31 Tug.

Thank you,
Andrew

Me thinks the factory does not install them at all. Good idea to control the drainage of water. On the R29, the stern one just drains into the cockpit. The two forward ones do drain into compartments, I will install hoses on them. I believe it's 5/16 hose, but I have plenty of stash in the basement. I never throw things out. My wife yells at me, but now I can say "See, I knew I would need this piece of hose some day!" Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut and install the hose. Happy wife...Happy life!!!

Thanks Andrew = that explains it. I plan to add them especially under the sink in the cockpit since there is a lot of electrical stuff there.

Best,
Bob

I purchased 5/16 hose at home depot for attaching to the cupholder drains - alas, it must be next size up. Like all projects, this will take multiple trips to home depot and at least one return desk visit.

How about a little heat from a propane torch? Then you won't need a clamp.

On my R31 hoses for the cup holder drains are ⅜ inch. As per the above I have a lot of 5/16 inch stuff to return. So, if anyone plans on doing this, use ⅜ inch hose.

Best,
Bob

On my R27, the 1 drain that looks like it could drip on the battery switches does not. If you feel up and around underneath the cup holder, you will feel the shelf of the cockpit fiberglass. The cup holders are in the cabin top fiberglass. IMO water can not get to where the switches are. Maybe it's different on an R31?

I have been following this thread, and gotta wonder why the drains were not fitted with hoses at the factory, especially when they are indeed intended to drain and do indeed appear to drain into problematic areas. Just sayin'.

I installed a hose on this cup holder when I was getting leakage under the sink area but it did not solve the problem. I think I am going to try and re-caulk around the underside of the sink and faucets to stop it.

i traded my 5/16 tubing for 3/8 and the run from the cockpit sink (R31) is pretty far to hit the bilge. Check the cockpit sink drain to see if tightened. Mine leaked until tightening.

We have one of these wineglass holders in a cup holder on our R-27, it may be a temporary expedient to stop leakage thru the drain.

It hasn't fallen out on it's own, but lifts out with a minimum of effort.

The cupholder in the cockpit near the sink in my R29 lifts right out from a hole cut in the fiberglass, leading directly into the cabinet where items get wet.

Add to that that the bimini leaks badly in significant rain like we are having tonight in Ketchikan, then add to that the leaking sidewalls and ... Water everywhere again :-(

The two cupholders on the sides of the cockpit seem like they might be glued in, with no provision for the holes in the bottom of the cupholders.
