Because my boat is documented with USCG, I place my WA registration sticker and the DTOPS sticker on the starboard aft window closest to the cockpit, lower left corner. I place my other registration sticker on the port side, on the same window. I've never had a problem with it here. I believe its supposed to be 18 inches from the door or something...

I put it on the cockpit door above the handle, as it's supposed to be near where the vessel is "boarded". We have not been boarded by USCG but the Auxiliary folks seem happy with it during voluntary checks.
One thing to note is that you will need that number when doing CBP Roam and it changes every year. When the sticker is easily accessible as with the cockpit door, it's simple to find it in case you've forgotten to record the new number in a given year (not that this has ever happened, uh twice, to me).
