I am looking to install a "Prop-tector" cutting device on my propeller shaft and need a minimum of 0.9 inches of clearance on the shaft between the propeller and the hull. Upon examining the prop shaft, I noted there there is not sufficient clearance because the cutless bearing (correct spelling?) is protruding from the hull about 3/8 inch.

Is this too much? Can I release the set screws and slide the bearing further into the hull without causing problems?

I need the prop-tector because we are in the prep stages for a great loop adventure. At the Looper Rendezvous last week in Norfolk, many of the experienced loopers highly recommended this product and are glad they have it.

Thanks for your collective wisdom...

Hey there Tim,

Thanks for the description and photos. We try to leave enough of the cutlass bearing hanging out past the keel extension so you can grab a hold of it if you ever need to remove it. If you want to loosen the set screw and tap it in a little further, I do not think you will hurt anything by doing this.

Hope all is well,

Andrew Custis

Andrew,

Thanks for the quick reply. I will slide the bearing in just enough to get the required clearance.

Regards,

TK

I have done a large majority of the loop. Many people complain about the crab pots. No one knows what a lot of crab pots are until you have cruised Maine. Don't get a false sense of security because you have the cutter. They don't work all the time. Also keep in mind that many of the cruisers have deep draft boats and no prop protection. I carry a snorkel and mask as well as a wet suit. I only had to use it once and I was out in the ocean 3 miles with no pots in sight. I don't win the lottery, but I was lucky enough to get tangled in someone's bathing suit. It was a man's trunks so there was no desire to search for the rightful owner. I doubt the cutter would have helped in that case.

Enjoy the Loop. It is a life experiencing adventure.
