spent the day at the boat show yesterday and had the chance to dig into the details of the Cutwater 288 in person.
This will likely be an unpopular post, but I came away pretty disappointed. The new interior doesn't leverage the beam as effectively as I expected. Now perhaps my expectations were too great, but I was expecting more of a Cut30 experience with the increased beam, yet it doesn't feel that way to me.
My biggest disappointments are:
The head is bigger but not use-ably bigger. I am not sure what benefits it provides - seems like wasted space.
There is a lot of wasted space in the new storage space in the berth. that unit is strangely designed with some hanging space
The main cabin layout doesn't really use the beam that much more effectively than the older 28.
It makes me think the 28 really is a special boat, especially with the diesel inboard. you get trailerability and all the functionality of the 288 plus lots of electrical charging power and heat from the diesel heater and inboard alternator.
For the PNW, the diesel-powered (435) 30 is the best boat in the range.
I also think that if we do see a larger cutwater like a 36/38/40, it's going to have serious competition from Backcove and may not be viable without upgrading the quality of fiberglass and wood.
also a warning to others, don't go on the Sabre 58 in Bell Harbor, you will witness the dark side and will be disappointed in every other boat 🙂
