Good Morning,

I have to trouble shoot my rear thruster. It seemed to labor spin slower with less force for a couple of bursts when I last used it then stopped working. I got down and investigated and the prop was stuck in the tunnel on some salt water marine build up in the tube. I was able to manually turn the prop and clean out the tube.

I checked the main fuse under the battery switches and they were functional. The rear thruster fuse looked slightly discolored but when switched with the bow thruster fuse worked fine. Not sure where to check next. What is likely to fail if the prop gets stuck and won't turn?

Thanks for your time this forum has been a wealth of knowledge.

If the thruster motor is responsive, but sounds like it is spinning out of gear and the prop doesn’t engage, it would be time to check the sheer pin. Lots of threads about replacing sheer pins that are very helpful.

The motor is not turning at all. Is there another fuse than the large one under the battery switches to check?

No other fuse that I’m aware of. There are several threads that have linked to troubleshooting flow charts. Search for them. Also, others have had considerable success calling Side Power directly for support. I’d go that direction. Good luck.

If you have the Lewmar thruster, which is what we have in our C30, on the thruster housing is what Lewmar calls the "black box". I have been told there is a thermal cutoff switch and an internal fuse in the black box. I haven't had to open the black box or change the fuse myself (I hope I did't just jinx that), so I can't verify, but a very qualified technician related to me he had changed one on another C30.

Lewmar has a troubleshooting guide online if you search for it. I can't give specific advice, but if you can find the guide, it might help. I would say it is worth verifying power to the thruster and that the switches work before you pull the thruster itself apart.

Hope this helps. Good luck

My rear thruster blows the big fuse every-time I activate it. There is a crackling noise, then the fuse blows. This has happened twice. The front is not working at all but is not blowing it's fuse.

Background: I just put the boat in the water. Over the winter I had a complete bottom job done. Media blasting, barrier coat, bottom paint. Looks great but....... A guy on the dock theorizes that paint in the tube may be keeping the blade from spinning.

Does this make sense? I can get the yard to pull the boat.

If there is something preventing the prop from turning in the tunnel it is possible for the motor to pull extra amps to try to overcome that which is blowing the fuse. I'm not familiar enough with the electronics in thrusters to say if that is a likely cause, but that is what happens in general in electric motors without current limiting controllers.
