I've read a few articles on 302 concerning fuel consumption.
I've read one that says 3500 rpm is about 21kts/24.9mph at 18.6 gph which is about 1.34 sMPG. This gives a range for 80% fuel use at 321 miles.

I've also read on a different article that it was 4000rpm 21.5 kts at 27.5 gph which is 0.9 sMPG. This gives a fax range of 238.

These are vastly different numbers.
What do you all get at about 18-23 kts?

I have a CW 32, successor of the 302, same boat with a larger swim step. The Boating magazine in more in line with what I experience. The 32 likes to cruise at 37-44 mph at 4500-4800 rpms with and fuel consumption of 0.9 mpg on the Yamaha gauge (The gauge only reads 0.7, 0.9, 1.2). I am guessing the true burn is somewhere around 1.0. My experience is that if drop the RPMs below 4000, your fuel economy drops to 0.7 mpg, and it's not on the secondary step.

Dan:

Are you really getting 37 - 44 mph at 4500 to 4800 rpm, or was that a typo? If it isn't, I'm trading in my brand new R27OB for a C320!

Thanks

CW C302 performance has been the most frustrating part of the boat for me. I started a couple threads and spoke to several people, here is the main one: http://www.tugnuts.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=14756. Clearly, the Yamaha test report is well off and I reported that to Yamaha who published the report. I also get performance roughly in line with Boating Mag. Since I'm mostly boating open water offshore, cruising above 4200 RPM is generally not a viable alternative.

What totally perplexes me is how I have to trim engines down (0%) and put trim tabs all the way down (the neutral position is slightly up) to achieve maximum performance, unlike any boat I've ever owned. Any trim up cuts my speed and raises fuel consumption.

Wow .9 gallons per mile is quite bad. I think that I'll keep researching different boats. That's 35% worse than what the manufacturer claims.

May have been a little low on the RPMs but I cruise around 40mph. This is typical readouts.

Thanks for posting the pic. which shows engine tilt at zero or close, that is optimal for me also. My last test in the bay, where I can go fast, was similar: 4600 RPM, 35 MPH, 34.9 GPH.

Yes, the port tilt is completely down. The port gauge flutters between one and two bars fully down.

I am with you, get the best performance completely down on the tilt.
