Right now, I measured 6’ of depth using my boat hook (6’ from waterline to bottom of slip). The depth finder on my Garmin is 4.7’ with a zero keel offset. So, if this is the case, do I really need a keel offset?

Mr. Forrest, your transducer is not located at the lowest (draft) of your vessel. You are in 72 inches of water, with a draft of let's say 26 inches you will have 46 inches of water under your keal not 5 ft 5 inches or almost a foot different. Your off set should be the difference from the transducer to the lowest part of the boat. Hope this helps. Bob

Thanks, Bob. Any clue the actual distance from the transducer to the bottom of the boat? I have outboard engines, so they are probably lower than the hull. At the factory delivery experience, we set it at 2.5 feet. I wanted to see what the reading would be with zero keel offset and in a measured six feet of water from the waterline. I was surprised, for some reason, that the reading in 6 feet of water was less than 5 feet. But, I guess it makes sense. I want to be as accurate as possible because a lot of channels in the East Cost are only 5 feet at MLLW.
