So looking to replace the air filter on my 2016 25SC with the D 3 150. The filter is a cheap plastic frame with even cheaper foam around it. When I say cheap I mean in build quality not cost. I guess you can blow out the foam and put it back on . The fear being the foam will deteriorate over time and get sucked into the turbo. So the ones I find are all located overseas. Does anyone have a source in the US? I did a search and I found a IMO better quality paper type filter like a KN. Anyone running these? They also talk about a crankcase filter. I am hoping whatever source would carry those as well. The local guy would have to order one in and not sure of availibility. Please advise.

Mr. Ben,

Don't know about non-VP parts, but if you want maintenance parts for your D3 I would go to the Ranger Tug factory. Go to the right side of the Tugnuts home page website and you will find "Attachments" and at the bottom of the list is a parts attachment. Fill the attachment out for what you want and send it to the factory. Your parts will be delivered to your home.

Hope this helps... Dick

The air filter is expensive and poor quality for sure. Now I’m out of warranty I change every 2 years. If I had a dog I would be much more concerned! You mention the crankcase filter. That is robbery level expensive!! After discussion with a couple of Volvo technicians I now replace also every two years or 200 hours instead of annually.

You may want to try dieselfiltersonline.com for a replacement crankcase filter. I purchased 2 of them for $70 which included $11.75 for shipping. These filters are the same as the one Volvo makes for my D4 260hp engine but about a third of the price.
They are the same as Mann diesels use so I trust the quality and when put side by side with the Volvo original I can't find a difference.
I'm not sure if the D3 used the same filter but the info for the D4 260hp Volvo crankcase filters I ordered are listed below.
Items Qty Subtotal
[LC-5001-X]Mann-FilterEuropeanCCVElement(SI-IndustrialHeavytruckandBus/Off-Highway)
SKU:LC-5001-X

Subtotal $58.54
Shipping&Handling $11.75
GrandTotal(Excl.Tax) $70.29

I hope this helps.

I met Britt when I was cruising down the Tenn Tom. He kept his boat docked at a marina we stopped at. When we were there he was in the process of removing the air filter and the filter foam that had ended up in his turbo. The heat from the compartment and the oil that by-passes the engine ventilation catch can break down the foam filtering element. The dirt that the filter catches is less abrasive to the turbo and engine induction than the filter itself is. IMO

This cheaply designed filter that should be inspected regularly for damage. The Airsep is more expensive but if maintained will last for years with a yearly cleaning.

I use OEM parts when servicing my engines. Most of the time theses OEM parts are more expensive than aftermarket parts. Are they the same? Maybe or Maybe not. I know when looking at the reverse gear filters aftermarket Vs OEM there was a noticeable difference in the filter mesh. OEM being much better quality. The one component that I would recommend going to after market is the air filter. There is no comparison. It is better and will last longer than the cheaply made Volvo filter. The Air sep is more expensive for a reason. It is better IMO.

As Brian mentioned I had a piece of filter go through the turbo. The way i discovered it was cruising at 2150 rpm I got an alarm and if I remember correctly the engine went into limp mode . I dropped hook and started looking around and found a pretty good section of filter missing on the bottom. I shut all power off to engine and restarted. Alarm cleared and has been running fine for almost 400 hrs . Another plus with walker filter is that it seems to reduce some of the intake noise in the cabin.
