D3-200 Alternator Replacement Options

Hi there,

I’ve had a check engine warning for months now. Seems it’s a low voltage issue. All batteries have been changed.

Has anyone replaced their alternator? If so are there any compatible units to the Volvo Penta 31419556?

There is a lot of things that can cause low voltage codes. Changing the batteries or checking the condition is a good first step. The next step would be checking all battery terminal connections and grounds at the batteries and the engine. Check all connections at the engine alternator for tightness and clean connections. Confirm that with the battery switch (ON) you are reading 12.5V+(using a VOA meter) at the alternator with engine not running. Start the engine. In the throttle only position advance the throttle to 1000 rpm now check the voltage at the alternator Battery + terminal. You should see an increase in voltage when comparing the reading with the engine not running. If you see an increase in voltage at the B+ terminal alternator then check the voltage at the engine battery. Check it at the battery terminals. The voltage reading at the batteries should be close to the same as the alternator reading. If there is a notable voltage drop the cables may have a bad connection. If you do not see an increase in voltage then it could be a bad alternator. Remove the alternator and take it to a alternator/starter rebuild shop for testing and if it test bad, repair it. If it is repairable this would be far cheaper than a new alternator.
