I normally cruise at 3100 rpm or less. The coolant temperature usually stays in the 170-180 range. I had an extended cruise this past weekend at around 3900 rpm and the engine stayed in the 226-228 range for the majority of the cruise. The water temperature is 80 degrees. Coolant levels cool and hot look good in the reservoir.

Is this normal?

Our will D3-200 run at 185-187 degrees all day at 3500 rpm. While I have have never run for long periods at 3900 it typical runs at 189 degrees at that rpm. Of course this is all in the 55 degree water of the PNW but I don't think the water temperature should make that much of a difference.

I would guess you are not getting proper cooling and would check all the usual culprits. Intake grate, Sea strainer, belts, impeller, and reverse gear heat exchanger.

Hello Admiral S,

Normal operating temps for the Volvo D3's will be well under 200 degrees, typically in the 185-195 degree range.

Any temperatures higher than 206 degrees will trigger an engine fault which will be displayed on the Volvo 4" display. There is typically a code that will be accompanied with the warning as well. It sounds as if you most likely have a seawater blockage, not allowing the seawater to cool the engine coolant. You'll want to check the items Red Raven provided above to be sure there are no blockages. I would also recommend only running at wide open throttle for short periods of time, 90% of WOT or lower would be the high end of my recommended cruise range.

Please feel free to reach out directly with any further questions: (253)839-5213.

Thanks,

Tim

Thanks Curt and Tim.

I will check what you have suggested this weekend. There were no alarms or warning on the Volvo display or Garmin. Normally cruise much slower but was in a hurry to get back. Top RPM on this engine validated during the post delivery inspection by the certified Volvo tech was 4190.

Thanks,
Seth

So i have been watching and checking and I think this was a case of looking at the wrong guages.

I confirm that my coolant temperature is always at the 170-180 range. It is the oil temperature that seems to climb up a bit when under higher load.
