We have a 2021 Cutwater 28 and I was in the process of changing transmission oil and filter. The filter brand was Gear
(Could not get a FZ or VolvoPenta) so when I went to install the Gear filter on the lid with the new o ring the filter did not stay on the lid. Checked the opening with the old filter and it was a bit larger than the original. Brian Brown had a thread that to install the filter properly you do not put the filter in first you fit the filter on the top cap and install as a unit. Had no issues last year with the ZF filter. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Also want to say thank you to Brian for his knowledgeable advice, if I had not read his article I would have just inserted the filter and think everything was good.

I believe the top and bottom holes on that filter are two different sizes .

Just make sure you have the proper filter.

That is one way to do it. ZF suggests Lubricant the o-ring and inspect o-ring fit to bottom cap assembly before installing into gear housing. The video is a good instruction as long as the oring fit is good. There is no way to inspect the fit when doing that installation. The technician pushed down hard but could not see the fit with it installed. Fitting the lower cap with oring to filter before placing it into the housing gives the technician insurance that the fit is proper and the filter is bottomed to the lower cap. Place filter and lower cap as an assembly then place large oring, lubricant and then fit cover and tighten the socket head bolt to 50 to 70 inch lbs. Over tightening the bolt can result in Galling. The cover is aluminum and the bolt is Stainless Steel.

I recommend only using ZF filters. I used Volvo filters and started seeing metal filings in the filter when I changed it. I took the filter with debris in it to a ZF rebuild shop, Federal Marine Transmission,Countryside, Illinois. When he looked at the filter he said you should use OEM filters. I stated I did. He said the filter was an aftermarket filter it is not a ZF. I said it is a Volvo filter for a Volvo gear. He said it is an aftermarket filter for a ZF gear Volvo put their name on. He highly recommended using ZF filters. He stated the reason for the metal was probably from an improper fit and air leaking by.

This is a D3 but looks the same to me. when I tried to loosen the bolt, it wouldn't budge. I applied more leverage and the bolt would not move but the whole assembly did and it finally came out. If I can't get it apart, can I replace the o rings and try to force it back together. If this is not feasable does anyone know the replacement part #s and where to buy?
Thanks, Kent

Hi Kent,
I found this: ZF Transmission Filter Cover part# 3312101003
An internet search will reveal a number of vendors…..expensive assembly!
Regards!

Does anyone know of a source for the ZF filter? In the initial post marob said he could not find the ZF or Volvo filter. I'll be attempting this soon as part of my spring maintenance.

I found all the parts and fliters etc. at marinepartssource.com. The assembly and o rings was $199.55. I am going to order the assembly and noit try to mess with the old one that I can't get apart.
